I have read and run the READ ME AND RUN FIRST. Great directions and I am mostly pleased with my results. One issue that concerns me is that when I startup my pc, internet explorer opens immediately and hangs. I have checked my startup menu and IE is not listed there. I can close the window and then double click on IE and it is fine. I have IE 7 and have installed SP2. Any suggestions??? Logs attached. Thanks for the help!!!

    Hi and welcome.

Do you also have the log generated by running Malware Bytes Anti-Malware? I would also like to see that.

The log from MBAM can be found in the below folders. You have to substitute your real user account name where you see UserName.
And in the meantime I will review your logs and get back to you with a set of instructions as soon as possible. Thanks for you patience during this time.

Hi there, looks like you've been infected since mid january, there's quite a bit to do so lets get started.

    1) If you do not use Windows Messenger Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

    2) Please go to Add or Remove Programs and uninstall the following older version of Java:

    • Java(TM) 6 Update 11

    3) Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O4 - HKCU\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [RunAntivirus] iexplore http://scan.scannerantispyware.com/10299/3/
    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [RunAntivirus] iexplore http://scan.scannerantispyware.com/10299/3/ (User 'SYSTEM')
    O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [RunAntivirus] iexplore http://scan.scannerantispyware.com/10299/3/ (User 'Default user')
    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
    O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - ?p=ZCxdm565YYUS
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    4) Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files and also some remnants from Combofix and viewpoint media.

    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it
(make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:

    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\GK9g9.bat
    C:\jnd.bat
    C:\ecF.bat

    C:\DbBHk.txt
    C:\DJUA4Np.txt
    C:\Dkhzy.txt
    C:\DTxKyHX.txt
    C:\DTxKyHX.txt
    C:\dlcf.log
    C:\e9hr.txt
    C:\io.txt
    C:\isr36utx.txt
    C:\k00XrFJ.txt
    C:\zmtbgwu.txt
    C:\k615j.txt
    C:\k6otf.txt
    C:\MExWce.txt
    C:\mmP16.txt
    C:\puRf.txt
    C:\qSQ6HU.txt
    C:\S4iFR.txt
    C:\sc8BBYF.txt
    C:\script.txt
    C:\UhMZAJ.txt
    C:\Xgt.txt
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\817CC7DBD8.sys

    Folder::
    c:\program files\Viewpoint
    C:\32788R22FWJFW

    Registry::
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\Currentversion\policies\explorer\Run]
    "RunAntivirus"=-

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3014/3035535531_512f04c6a2_o.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    4) Now reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

    5) Now Run Ccleaner!

    6) Now goto this link Using MGTools and download the new version of MGtools.exe using the black bold print link in the first sentence. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

    7) Run the new MGTools.exe and attach the log it generates.

    8) Also attach the log from running ComboFix.

    9) be sure to tell me how things are running now.

...and don't forget to attach the log from MBAM

    Thanks
    Kestrel13!

Whew!! So far, so good!!! Speed seems much better. Don't see anything funky yet. Upon restart, IE did not attempt to open so that is great. I am attaching the requested logs. Please let me know if I need to do anything else. I am so grateful for your help :)

On a side note, in Step 3, I did not have a line 08. Hope this isn't a problem.

Hi.. your logs are clean. :)

Delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).

    • C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Laura\Local Settings\TEMP

    And finally...

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thanks so much!! What a relief. I will take care of this tonight. I do have another question. I was reading the section about protecting yourself in the future. I was intereted in installing commodo to get the firewall, but it also says not to install this if you have another AV because it includes it's own AV. The computer that I am working on belongs to my parents and they purchased AVG. I'm not a big fan of AVG but since they have paid money for it, I left it on there. Could I disable AVG, leaving it on there, but not active and then install commodo without any problem??

Not really :( I would stick with just the AVG personally.

Which firewall would you recommend in that case?? I have the windows firewall on, but that obviously didn't do much.

I'm not really supposed to suggest one, more like link you to a list of choices, but I can tell you that I use the below: :)

    PC Tools Firewall Plus 5.0.0.38
