    Hello,

About 4 days ago (6-14-08), I started getting a message on startup on my HP 7067 XP-MC desktop, saying 'Backweb security notice' 'A new certificate has arrived for channel updates from HP. There is a Gery "Certificate" in the center of the box saying consumer PC HP, Cupertino, CA, issed by server certificate-RSA data security, expires 3-25-2005. I contacted HP.com/ privacy and sent them a screenshot of it.
    They came back with :

"The certificate you're seeing is related to an HP/Compaq desktop messaging program. The following question and answer is one of the "Frequently Asked Questions" about this program, which you can access at:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&docname=bph05170#bph05170_CP2."

"Q. Should I accept a digital certificate I've received referencing HP and BackWeb technology? What if the expiration date of the certificate is in the past?
    A. Digital certificates referencing HP and BackWeb may occasionally appear on your desktop if you still have an older messaging service installed. (The expiration date on a digital certificate may be a past date, such as May 17, 2002 or March 11, 2000.) HP recommends that you uninstall the older non-supported services using the Add/Remove Programs utility in Microsoft Windows Control Panel. Look for Updates from HP, HP Connections, Compaq Connections, or HP Center in the list of programs and click Remove or Uninstall."

I looked and don't see any older program that resembles what they're saying I should delete prior to installing this 'newer program'. I replied back to them to this effect and they are not chatting anymore.
This is not clear to me at all. sounds Phishy.

Does anyone have any ideas on this?

    Thanking you..........................

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

This is really not a malware issue even though most of us do not like the backweb updating software methods. Before we go any further, do you really want to have this backweb software running and automatically updating without your knowledge? Apparently it does not work properly anyway if you are out of date.

    Thanks for the reply.
I get auto HP updates and I have manually retrieved HP updates (very seldon) , but have recieved them.

I guess it sounds like it's OK to click 'OK' on this one.
My main issue is that I don't see any 'older version' named as HP's response said I would, to delete prior to downloading this newer one.

I guess either they didn't cover all the bases of program name possibilites, or the person just didn't know.

I 'assume' it will be ok to install this one without deleting an old one.

    Thanking you...........................

Yes more than likely it is okay.

I got a Phone call from HP Privacy today. They showed me where to find the HP Update software under control panel/remove software, that was referenced in an earlier post to this thread. It was under "Update HP". I had looked under 'HP Update' and couldn't find it. They told me a bunch of things I can't remember, but recommended that I just delete "Update HP" and that would remove the Backweb messages. I did it and the message went away.
Hopefully this little mini drama is over.

I'm happy to hear you got it resolved. As I implied earlier we really do not recommend using Backweb which is used by many companies including HP.
