Questions about BitTorrent running slow

Ok, so I have been here:

    http://p2p.weblogsinc.com/2005/04/24...ent-downloads/

And I have set it the way it tells you to. I have used Port Forwarding on my router. The only difference is you can only set the port minimum on BitTorrent, so I set it to 6881 - 65535 and unchecked the Enable Automatic Port Mapping. Even if that item is checked there is no increase or decrease in speed.

I still get download rates of like 4kbps.

I could understand if it was an unpopular file. But in some cases the file is like 750 seeds and 2 leechers.

    What could be the problem?

I don't have a third party firewall and my Windows Firewall is disabled. In my router admin stuff I have a Firewall section...the only thing checked by default is Filter Multicast. Yet, BitTorrent in the lower right hand corner says "Online, Maybe Firewalled."

Am I doing something wrong here?

Depending on where you are, (like here) your ISP might be throttling it down, to save bandwidth for other users. That is what my provider is doing.

I switched to utorrent, its well faster than bittorrent which i used before. Its free so it may be worth a try. You can download it off here.

torrents will never be really fast compared to ddl's but you could set the torrents priority to high. other then that i have no clue.

I would agree with the others try utorrent since the newest version of bittorrent is not well reviewed.

Pick one specific high port number like 58999. Use that port number for port forwarding and in utorrent.

In utorrent Options>Preferences>Connection enter the port number 58999 and make sure box for "Add utorrent to Firewall Exceptions" is checked.

Run the speed guide included with utorrent and go with their recommendations. It will automatically set utorrent to the correct settings. (for tweaking: increasing/decreasing your maximum upload rate by units of 5 can help determine at which point your upload rate becomes so high that it begins to slow down/choke your download rate--generally the speed test results are about right but sometimes you can increase the upload rate a little, but beware too high and it will slow your downloads and make surfing while torrenting unpleasant)

I would go back to http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm and find your router and then on next page choose utorrent as the program you're setting your ports for. Follow the instructions exactly using port 58999 where applicable.

Once you have utorrent and your port forwarded try downloading Open Office version 2.2.0 for Windows in English http://distribution.openoffice.org/p2p/ . You should get a very good download rate, well over 150kB. If you are not, it may be a problem with your ISP. I guess you could try downloading before any changes for a comparison rate. And, of course, you do not have to complete the whole file just connect long enough to get an idea of your top download rate.

Sach2 knows what he's talking about ;) You should definitely use just one port number, and set everything up in your router as shown at portforward.com... those folks know their business too. I'm not familiar with BitTorrent, but I'd recommend a switch to uTorrent. It has a built in 'Speed Guide' that helped me get my situation straightened out. I too was getting really slow downloads, NEVER over 20k for more than 10 seconds or so, and never, EVER over 30k. After configuring everything using the portforward.com guide, I now get over 100k regularly, sometimes up to 300k or more....
