Now that the newbie has got this new build computer up and running with the help of several nice persons on this board, he has more questions to ask. I have a WD800JB HDD and if it is partitioned into several different partitions. The O/S XP Pro is on C: drive and lets say I installed Quicken on F: drive, how does XP reconize that quicken is on F:, can I put a shortcut on desktop and access quicken thru the desktop? or a game on G: drive would I have to go to G: drive to access the game and if so what benefits of multi-partition?

Its (the location) recorded in the registry when you install it.

Just about EVERYTHING is recorded in the registry. Even standalone executable programs that don't require an "installation"
