I just switched a Compaq Presario SR5130NX from Vista to 2000 PRO to make the PC compliant with the rest of our systems here at our office. I used Darik's Boot and Nuke software to erase, and then installed windows 2000 Pro, and then installed the audio, video, and chipset drivers afterwards.
Everything seems to be in order so far, except for my USB's...
I cannot get the USB ports to recognize flash drives without using the find new hardware wizard; even then, the flash drive doesn't always read... and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to correct this issue. I have not yet completed the microsoft updates for the system yet, and am doing so right now. If the microsoft updates help, I will post back saying so.

Thanks for the help to any who stop by...

What does device manager say about your installed USB controllers and hubs?
Have you got a suitable drivers installed?

Okay, checkin device manager shows that I have everything installed just fine, but when i try to hook up a plug-n-play device, I see a yellow error question mark appears on unknown devices.

You obviously haven't. Windows 2k works just fine with USB plug and play.

What I really mneant was what have you got installed? How does this compare with your othere pcs? presumably they run these usb devices OK?

The last entry in Device Manager should be
    +Universal Serial Bus controllers
when expanded it shows USB Root Hub
maybe Generic USB Hub and mine has a specific PCI to USB Open Host Controller.

I see the same thing, but i still have trouble getting the PC to recognize devices connected to the USB, mostly just flash drives and label printers... is there a possibility that the drivers still need to be updated and that windows is not recognizing that they do?:confused

Here is what i see when i open device manager and expand the USB Controllers

    -Universal Serial Bus Controllers
---Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller
---Standard Open HCD USB Host Controller
    ---USB 2.0 Root Hub
    ---USB Mass Storage Device
    ---USB Root Hub

I hope this helps... thanks to all who are assisting me !:)

*bump* I have also tried to update each driver individually, and I am still finding the same issues...

I think the crux here is the word 'standard'. Windows 2K has installed generic drivers for the usb system, not chip specific ones for the Presario. You will need to identify the USB controller chip (Texas or whatever) and get drivers for it.

fantastic:), thank you for the help... just out of curiosity, do I need to look at the USB chip itself??? Or, is there, perhaps, a website I could get the information from...?

Find out what the motherboard is.

Download Everest from Major Geeks (free) and look at the hardware listing

I turned on a second win 2K computer and had a look. This one also has a specific PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller so studiot was spot on eying what is wrong.
Flash drives are plug and play from ME on up. The only time you need drivers is for 98SE.
(I had computers running 98SE, ME and 2K at the same time and it was always a fight to get something USB recognized in 98SE).
