    hi,

i have a laptop with vista in one partition, xp in the other. it's becoming obvious that i'm never going to use vista. is it possible to delete that partition & add the free space onto the xp partition without screwing everything up, or having to reinstall xp?

if so, any suggestions as to what program to use?

    thank you!
    dave

Do you actually need more space on the XP partition? You could still use the partition Vista is now on, even if Vista were uninstalled.

We really have no idea how large it is, do we? He made no mention of partition sizes.

Well, I fully agree with your view on removing Vista. It could, and probably would, be a foolish move.

And, I agree that, if OP needs more drive space with Vista remaining installed, then buying an external hard, or maybe a larger internal drive, makes more sense than removing Vista now and then regretting it later.

Of course, even 80GB of free space may be plenty, if he doesn't install a lot of large programs, accumulate music, digital photos, etc., and there may be no need to combine partitions even if he did remove Vista. Sure would be helpful to have some feedback from the OP. :(

    hi!

you know, it never occured to me to just delete vista & use the partition as is? i guess i just like to have as few drives as possible

the laptop came with vista installed, i wanted xp (i use a lot of recording software and none of it works with vista), so i made a small 30gb partition and put xp on it as a test. xp worked fine on the machine once i had the drivers installed, and i am happy to say all my recording/music production works wonderfully again. and it's about a billion times faster than in vista.

vista is still in a 220gb partition that i'd like to make use of. i suppose i could definitely just leave vista alone and make some new directories in it.

    maybe i'll just do that.

    thanks!

If you want to explore, as time permits, some tweaking of Vista to get it to perform better, visit this blog by MG administrator, Adrynalyne: So, you have a new machine shipped with XP/Vista.... The gist of his blog is to get rid of a lot of unnecessary software installed by manufacturers, programs that may be degrading performance and consuming drive space.

Also, if your laptop has 1GB of RAM, increasing that to 2GB will provide noticeably better performance with Vista.
