This should probably be in the network forum, but I need an answer pretty quick and figured I'd get better exposure here...

The standard way to set up and name a network drive is this:
This is from KB308582 at the Microsoft Knowledge Base. My question is this: what exactly is the "share name"? I understand that "server name" would be the name of the PC where the drive to be shared/mapped is physically located, but what is the "share name"?
    Thanks!

I was just doing some other research on this topic, and found this:
So.... what is meant by "available network share"? Does this mean "drives on other PCs on the network"? If so, why don't they just say that instead of 'network share'?

Let's see here so here is a scenerio that will hopefully answer your question.

You have a folder on another computer or server that you would like to access from another computer on the same network/domain. First you would right click the folder that you want to "share" with another computer and choose "Sharing and security.." Next you will want to click on the "Share this Folder" bullet and give it a share name of your choice. Next you will want to click on the Security tab then add that computer or user into the list of those who need permissions and then assign it read, write, modify, etc. whatever you want them to be able to do with it its up to you.

Next you would go onto the client computer where you would right click my computer --> Map network drive and then you would input the server or computer name followed by whatever you called the folder share on the other computer. Example. Servername DC01 Sharename Finance. You would map it in the following way \\dc01\Finance

Let me know if this helps and also if you have any other questions.
