I replaced the 40mm fan on my motherboard (ASUS A8N-E) with another chipset fan because my original one was failing. My new fan only has the black and red wires coming from it where as the old one had those plus the yellow wire. After replacing the fan and reinstalling all my hardware, the computer won't boot. Could it be because there is no fan speed wire going to the motherboard and it doesn't detect the fan it won't let me boot as a safety measure? Or is there something else that I screwed up? I'd like to get to the store asap before they close so I have a computer through the weekend. :cry Thanks for any responses.

can u get into BIOS? if u can, go in and disable monitoring for the chipset fan. The yellow wire IIRC is for monitoring the speed of the fan

yeah, i can't get into the bios either. the computer turns on but nothing on the screen. The only reason I asked about the fan is because when I unplugged the fan to see if that was the culprit of the noise, the computer didn't boot with it unplugged. But I didn't know if that was simply the cause of there being no fan speed or over heating. I'm going to run to the computer store and get another one.

Well, I was wearing an ESD bracelet attached to my case, so hopefully I'm covered there. I do hear my hard drives spin and my HDD LED on the front of the computer lights up and flashes. All my fans spin, and the lights on my DVD drives go on too.

can u try sticking in the old broken fan and see if it will boot? Double check that your video card is in tight, the rest of your hardware sounds OK

I had to run to school real quick but I'll check the old fan in a bit and report back.

I can't tell you how many times the answer to my problem is the simplest thing. :D. I guess when I was taking out my motherboard to replace the chipset fan, I accidentally knocked the plug off my CPU fan. When I went to go plug it back in, I stuck it in the chassis fan instead of the CPU fan connector. :banghead Thanks to ASUS for putting the two right next to each other lol. Of course I realized all of this after I had already taken everything apart but at least I'm up and running again. Now I'm off to install Vista. :highfive
