    hi

i hope i am not bothering you by asking this quick question bout a laptop

i am currently surfing the net but it is running really slow
i have brought up task manager and there is a process running called iexplore.exe and dwm.exe

Iexplore is running at 26,140 but has gone up to 45,000k
and dwm.exe is running at about 12,000k

Are these normal programs? should they be running at this memory usage? could they be malware or spyware?

    cheers for your help

iexplore.exe is Internet Explorer ( your browser ) and dwm.exe is Desktop Window Manager. Both are valid Windows processes and memory usage will vary.

    Thanks for the reply

    One more question

can these processes affect the speed in which a computer runs and the speed of accessing the internet

I only ask because my dads laptop runs fine one minute then the next time you load it up it is really slow and the internet runs slow.

These processes are the ones with the highest use of memory so i thought that these could be slowing the machine down

    is that possible?

Everything you run impacts PC performance including internet browsing. If you don't run Internet Explorer, you will not be able to browse the web unless you use another browser.

If you think you are having malware problems then you need to run the below because these vague questions cannot be answered. All programs use memory. How much memory depends on what operating system and what you are doing with the programs. How much memory something uses does not necessarily mean it will slow your PC down unless your PC is running out of memory. What is more important is how much CPU time a process is using.

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
    Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
