Hopefully I ain't breaking no rules. If so Ill know when I wake up and this thread is deleted. But I was on another forum and I was reading what they wrote and they put the site casttv.com on the site asking about a thing on it. And I didnt get any bad things from firefox so I went to it. And it shows a bunch of shows. And I googled and it comes up on google so I figure casttv.com is a site that has come out for viewing shows on. So my question is.. is casttv just like hulu? Is it safe to view things on it? Or stay away!? Also Is it illegal to watch shows online like hulu/casttv?

    Hi

Casttv has been around for a while, since 2006, its not a host of video unlike youtube, more a video search engine like google/bing are.

It does list a DMCA notice for copyright holders to complain about them listing a specific video in tbeir search database, so cover themselves off against IP laws, so personal view is that its doibg no wrong as it hosts no files just links you too them and it it was then would have thought the RIAA or verious movie/tv studios would have had it closed down by now. However dont think relinking videos here woukd be approprieate, let that site carry the can for legal action, but in privacy of own home then why not.

Would not also be posting here on how to burn any videos to disk as that could dependant on copyright fall foul of copyright laws again.

The US hear about illegal activities a lot more than most other countries and are one of the few countries who actually take action.
I see it on the new frequently, I used to think the same as you Digital until I moved here. (here being Can, not US lol)

Well the thing is I thought it was illegal to host or upload/download movies that you didn't pay for. But I was simple asking if casttv was illegal to view for my usa butt. I know theres hulu but they don't got much on it and I seen many things on that casttv site. But I dont want to go watch it if the goverment knocks on my door. And the reason I ask is cause what I brought up and seen things and know things.. like all police officials and judges and even the best lawyers are corrupt and us being brought up with corruptness then you got the real goverment who can do anything they want and I dont want to get introuble for watching that website. My question should be is casttv illegal for americans to just watch off there site?

    Hi

I will refer you back to my original answer un thst casttv and viewing their site is fine, they are jyst a search portal for video content and list a DMCA notice for themselves. The issue is when you click on a link then you are off casttv site and their legal responsabilities and in tbe hands of whi evers site us actually hosting the video, as casttv dont host.

Will you havw gov agents knocking down your door, highly unlikely as you are not the host, but a viewer, likely worst that could happen is that if you hammer your bandwidth, is rhst your ISP coukd send you a fair usage notice, and/or bandwidth limit you.

Streaming media is a minefield, and one that will this year be a talkibg point in legal circles, but if you are in doubt as you sound in not wanting to do anything illegal then take the safe option and dont use a service if you have concerns.

If the only question is regarding the likely hood of being caught then it varies from country to country and the law and the ability of the law to act is in constant flux ATM bcause we're going through a transitional period with regard to Intellectual property as Halo pointed out,it's highly unlikely regular surfers are prosecuted they mostly go after people who download huge amounts and are burning copies to sell but saying that sometimes people are taken to court and fined for downloading a 200kb game

If you want to surf perfectly clean and have piece of mind Silas just use your head, all visual entertainment costs money to make therefore its never free and you are breaking the law by watching something for free.

Constant downloading all day of illegal files, there have been quite a few busts in the UK where computer and copying equipment was seized, how much of that was network related evidence I couldn't say.

Only if you take it out of context and engrave it in stone, the context is how a paranoid Silas 'well you are:-D:p' can be SUPER safe on the web and sleep easy.

The likely hood of anything bad happening to a in your words 'clicker' is infinitesimally small but yet it is real and tangible as people have in the past been prosecuted for playing on line copies of arcade games and watching TV shows for free,I don't agree with it but the fact is it has happened.

So in that respect the original ethos of the internet that information in all it's forms can be freely distributed is alive and well apart from small blips on the radar where powerful people have tried to pull in the reins and control it.

Well I didnt go to to much after earlier post. I just seen it and thought it had a lot of shows on it. And know theres hulu out there, so I just wondering if it was the same thing as Hulu is and anyways Ill just go play poker online and listen to music like I always do. :-D

    Good choices Silas.

A line to remember is *if it looks too good to be true, then it is* which is why many get caught out with p2p and end up in the malware forum, they blame Windows and the Browser but its not its the human behind the keyboard.

The powers that be is a pretty broad brush, all the cases I've see have been privately funded IT investigations by the content makers who privately paid for them.

Over here saying such and such a person was on whatever site via ISP torrent/records isn't classed as strong enough evidence and no court would convict someone on that evidence alone, there has to be evidence on the machine in question 'even with regard to paedophiles' or an admission of guilt.

Dragging a net through the Atlantic is a good analogy though, the tactic by these private investigations is to send out 5000 letters to people threatening further action 'which they have NO power to perform' then wait for the poor souls who feel guilty enough to admit guilt then use this as evidence.

    A pretty twisted little game.
