Quick Startup question

Okay, I feel a little dumb for asking this, but here goes...

I used msconfig to uncheck QTtask and a blank startup entry. After I restarted, I got the Selective Startup box, yadda yadda. I get a ZoneAlarm alert that says Windows Configuration Utility is trying to prevent MSConfig from running every time the computer is started. I denied changes.

If I want to keep using Selective Startup instead of Normal, I would deny changes, right? The reason I ask is because I've been using Selective Startup (and ZoneAlarm) for ages now, but I don't ever remember getting that alert before.

I'm a little confused.

 

You would be advised to use something like CCleaner for startups.

MG's does not recommend using msconfig.

CCleaner

Click on Tools then startup.

Try that.

 

Startup inspector is a good one as well. Someone else would have to provide a link. I would think major geeks would have it. Its free.

 

Set msconfig back to normal. And then use http://majorgeeks.com/Startup_CPL_d619.html
What OS are you on, as this utility is not yet Vista compatible.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. I think I'll use CCleaner for Startup, since I already use that program for cleanup.

So why is selective startup not recommended to use? Is it unreliable? Just curious.

Also (and I feel dumb for asking), do I just select which startup programs I don't want, then I'm all set? Or do I want CCleaner to run automatically at each startup?

 

StartupCPL would be the better choice as mentioned by sikvik.
But if you want to use CCleaner just set the ones you dont want.
