    Hello,

I am trying to add additional memory but I need to figure out what type of memory I need. I tried Crucial's system scanner but it didn't help much as my PC is a friend's build and he doesn't know how to identify the parts.

What I found out was that I have 512 mb of memory with one memory slot available with 2048mb of potential memory. My CPU Speed is 2806 MHz and the Front-Side Bus Speed is 133 MHz.

I'm a complete non-techie as far as hardware goes but I keep seeing differences in specifications everywhere e.g. DDR/DDR2 (is DDR400 the same as DDR memory but with 400Mhz?), 400Mhz/333Mhz/266Mhz, PC3200/PC2700/PC2100 and then there's the pins - 184 pins seems normal.

Can anybody please help me to avoid a major ebay disaster by finding the right sort of specs I need?

    Thanks for any help.

    Regards,

    Steve

    Aha,

Using Everest, I just found out that my present system memory is PC3200 DDR SDRAM. FYI, my motherboard is as follows:

    CPU Type - Intel Celeron D 335, 2800 MHz (21 x 133)
Motherboard Name - ECS 661FX-M (Deluxe) (3 PCI, 1 AGP, 1 CNR, 2 DDR DIMM, Audio, Video, LAN)
    Motherboard Chipset - SiS 661FX

Can you tell me whether I am likely to encounter compatibility issues with what seems like earlier models (my PC is still fairly new, about 1-year-old)? I'm still not sure what the Mhz spec is referring to and whether I meet that requirement.

    Thanks for your help, Rikky,

    Steve

P.S. I could send the whole report but I was a little worried about prying eyes being able to use this information against me.

No problem :) Right so you need ddr 400 or pc3200 182 pin,the problem with memory is you wont know if two sticks are compatible until you install them both, you could buy the memory off ebay which looks exactly right but just wont work, therefore its best advised to buy the memory from a known store you can return it too or ebay your current memory and buy 2 512 sticks of identical memory

Its recommended the two sticks of memory are as identical as possible right down to the specific batch in the case of dual channel, different memory sticks use different voltages, timings and have various other compatibility quirks

IF you need your computer running to surf ect. Identify the memory installed in your computer, you will have to look inside and write down everything from the side of the memory and then see if you can find a stick somewhere for sale :)

EDIT here the link to your motherboard for future reference
