    I started when I was 13

Gave up while I was pregnant with my 2 boys, started again straight after. Gave up again in 1997 after emergency admittance to ER one night. Stopped for 5 years. Hit a wall in 2002 and started again. Gave up Easter 2003 and been off them ever since. Got told I could never go back now, so I am trying hard not to.

Great at least your off them now, so keep going :)

Some of the work involved with now all points to Smoking as a major cause of loss of sight in later life  stopping reduces the risk by near 40%

Sadly it could take 10-20yrs to reach that level of a non-smoker.

I am a smoker, tried quite a few "gimmicks" to quit, but find that one must have a WILL to stop smoking. I just don't have the WILL power to do it.

Started smoking when I was 15 because a girl I liked, smoked. Quit cigarettes (note spelling mcadam;)) when I was 20. It was an easy quit because I only smoked for 5 years, and I wanted to quit. Oh, I never got the girl.

100% of people that don't smoke still die. True story.

There used to be chimp at the London Zoo in the sixties that used to walk around his cage smoking a cigarette and blowing up balloons and stuff. Apparently, he was one of the chimps used the old Tarzan movie series.

People used to chuck their cigarette butts in the cage - yeck! Needless to say, it got stoped eventually. I don't know how long "Cheeta the Chimp" lived, but he was pretty old.

smoked for 7 years and counting
I quit for about 2 months once, but found I didn't like the taste of alcohol without smoking. Rather than save twice the money, I decided revelling in hedonism was a pleasant, if deadly, alternative.
    how's quittin for you SPD?
    congrats

dont know the exact stats. .but

    I too started at 13
    quit in basic

    couldnt do pt
    so went to px
    got some squares
    and started again

so I didnt smoke for 12 weeks

now if ya add up all the hours a day I dont smoke. . .

If I can do it, you can do it, Scousetechie - trust me. I smoked for 26 years and quit in Dec of 2002. Haven't touched one since. Coming up on three years - and I have less will-power then a monkey offered a cupcake! So hang in there! I've seen studies that indicate the first week is the worst.
I did have some help - I used the gum for a while.

    Good luck!

Best of luck to you Scou, it can be done. I smoked for 6 years and woke up one morning and decided to quit. Haven't touched a cigarette since, and that was 3 years ago.

Quitting smoking is something that is really hard. It is a true addiction as well as a nasty habit. You just don't realize how much your clothes, car, self reeks of smoke until you're off them a while.

I quit 16 years ago, believe it or not, after a group hypnosis session. Of course, I was ready and anxious to quit. Threw a gold Dunhill lighter out the car window on the way home. Have never had another.

I think the weight gain that goes with it, is partly due to the fact that food actually tastes better.

Stick with it, you'll feel better.

Yeah..the first two weeks are hard, but also as far as your body is concerned they are the best! I was amazed when I read it a few months back on a poster in our nurse's treatment room. Within 20 minutes of your last cigarette (or fag in Mcadams case :p ) your lungs are already working hard at healing and there is a noticeable significant improvement medically. Again in an hour, then 2 hours etc, until by 2 weeks the "cold turkey" aspect is done. I was just absolutely fascinated with the power of the body to heal, regardless of whether you've been slowly poisoning yourself for a couple of years or 25, as in my case.

It is hard and to those who are quitting or thinking of it, take each minute, hour, day at a time and celebrate each time you haven't had a smoke. Looking too far ahead can be discouraging. Each cigarette not smoked is a cause for patting yourself on the back and saying "good job!" :D
