okay so this might be a n00bish question but here goes anyways:

when windows 98SE is upgraded to XP Home Edition, are all the files kept? Are all the settings kept too?

You have a choice of keeping or dumping the files.

Some settings will transfer some are no longer appropriate.

You will also require many new settings.

Windows 98 runs on the FAT file system. Windows XP can run on FAT, and it has some servicing advantages. Your Windows 98 boot floppy will still work and allow you to troubleshoot the installation.

Windows XP normally runs on the NTFS system and once you have upgraded you will have the option to change over. Give it serious consideration. Once you have converted you can't revert to 98 and your boot floppy will no longer access the hard drive.

For best results, use a Windows XP Upgrade disc. They're about $100 at Office Depot and such places... that's for the XP Home SP2 Upgrade. Using the upgrade (when used correctly) will save everything, even your wallpaper, so when you're done, it will look and run exactly the same, but it's Windows XP Home. The only problem you might run into is drivers. If you have a device installed and XP doesn't have a built-in driver, and if XP can't use or update the W98 driver, then you'll need to locate and install a compatible WinXP driver. Usually not a big deal. Most of the time, XP will install all the drivers. The theory being this: you're running W98, so your hardware is all pretty old, therefore XP will have the drivers included. But, like I said before, this isn't always the case.
