Well, I am quiting smoking. Started cutting back last Saturday, and today, I have not smoked in almost 12 hours. Not easy, but not too bad.

Have a good one, and if you see crazy posts from me in the next day or two, you will know why.

It is really tough for some and easy for others. GOOD LUCK :)

I need to do that too. Im too weak willed!

I managed 2 weeks on patches and then carried on when they had gone!

I need to motivate myself to get 8-10 weks patches of the doctor methinks!

    GOOD LUCK! ;)

Thanks for all the replies. I have been smoking for about 17 years, smoking almost 2 packs of ultra lites a day.

Wayne82, you might want to read around some on this site: http://whyquit.com/ and yeah, it sounded like a cult almost when I first started reading it, but if you look around, it has info on nutrition, the effects of nicotine, and some good info. And it is a free site. You will know when you are ready to quit. 3 days is all it takes. And it really has not been that hard so far. I won't preach to you.

It has not been fun, but I have been out job hunting while I quit, got a nice job until I can get certified, pimping wine! Sure, I want a smoke, but not so much. And I am drinking beer also:D! (Not at my new job, I start that Friday.)

13.5 hours of being awake and not smoking. I say my Pimp Hand is strong, and smokes are a bit@h that can't work any more...

Hey fred all the best with the stopping, i stopped along with my wife on 14 Feb this year we tried for many years without success but the lung specialist for my wife told us about a new pill called CHAMPIX if you google it you get a load of info (i just noticed in the USA it goes under the name CHANTIX) it really did the trick for us, what you do is begin the course with 1 pill per day and you find you have no craving for the cigarette after about 5 or6 days then you set a day for the last cigarette and stop,it really was that easy, of course i still want a cigarette sometimes but it is not so hard to say no.

sorry Wayne but i do not think you can get this i UK yet as it has not been registered.

anyone who is trying to stop i wish you all the will you need to succeed:grouphug

Thanks I seen all that kind of stuff before. No words or pictures will influence me any more than they allready have. My gran died of smoking related illness in her 50s, and my mums poorly now in her 40s. If that hasnt helped I dont know what will.

2 months of patches will do it I reckon. They are free from the doctor, its just getting off my butt to do it.

If I do get some soon Ill be sure to post and let you know. Ive done well to give up a lot of stuff in the last 2 years which I wont talk of here. Im going one step at a time. That will be the next step eh?

Good to here its going well for you also ;)

Wayne: I remember a government warning on TV in the UK that might hit you harder now, under the circumstances. It kinda went like this....

" If you think giving up smoking is hard, try telling your kid you have cancer...."

My kids wept in front of me when I told them I had taken up smoking again after 5 years of quitting. I couldn't even bear that sight, let alone the thought of having to tell them one day I was dying because of my own stupid choices. I gave up and never looked back.

Hope that helps you nuture the conviction to beat this :)

Try putting the $$$ you spend on cigs, into a big jar you can see into. The pile of notes that accrue in that jar will help motivate you.

Attached is a gif, I copied from an earlier MG post on smoking. Bazza

Well, day number 2 is almost behind me. Had a little trouble sleeping, no big deal though. Still have not smoked! I found a funny wine name today at work. I like the Zinfandels (note, this is NOT white wine). And they have one called 'The 7 Deadly Zins', that will come home with me on payday. It even has lust, greed, gluttony, and 4 more sins on the label.

Oh well, thanks for the nice posts.

Hang in there, Fred_G - if I can quit, anybody can. I have absolutely no will power. I had to use smoking aids (gum) to see me through. It was pretty easy to get off the gum after that. In my case, the not smoking got a lot easier after the first week or so.

I smoked for over 25 years . . . and have been smoke free since Dec 2, 2002. Best decision I ever made.

bigbazza had a good idea with the cash jar. Or, in my case - for every month I didn't smoke that first year, I'd buy myself something - usually computer related (imagine that lol).

Good luck, Fred_G. It isn't an easy thing to do, not at all - but it's the best decision a person can make for themselves and their loved ones.

Well, update for you. Day number 3, and still not smoking!!! :D

It has not been easy, but has not really been that bad. Cravings are now more or less like when the power is off at your house, you still try to turn on the light when you go to the bathroom, even though you just lit a candle for the main room.

    E

Hey Natakel, what does your sig mean?

You know, it would be much easier for you if you guys could have babies. You suddenly discover your pregnant and HAVE to give up smoking, but just to help you along you get blessed with morning sickness which totally takes your mind of the fact you are craving a ciggie :D

Ahh, Lev, if guys could have kids, which end would they come out of, and how is that going to help us out overall... We would have kids that smell like sh!! or folks that just say pi$$ on it...

Congrats on passing day three! You've come this far, and that's an accomplishment in itself! Well done.

My sig is a Roman saying that means, loosly, "In matters of taste there can be no dispute" Or more exactly "One does not Argue about Tastes". I liked it ever since my two brothers were once in a heated discussion about one of them liking Pumpkin pie over Peach pie . . . rolleyes

Thanksgivings at our parents house usually ended up in such pointless discussions :D

I was busy at work and forgot to add my recent reason for the sig . . . the never-ending debate over Mac vs. PC and the sometimes vitriolic dispute over Vista's pros and cons vs XP's, etc. lol. Ya know, some people just like one over the other! ;)

Congratulations! At day three you passed the physical addiction. The rest is Psychological. If you know in your heart it's time to quit it makes it a lot easier.

In my case I smoked for over 30 years and was smoking 3 packs a day when I quit cold turkey. That was when the Doc told me I had early stage emphasima. (I probably spelled that wrong) He said If I quit now my body will clean it up but if I kept doing 3 packs a day I would be dead in less then 2 years. That was a little over 8 years ago and I'm still ticking.

    Best of luck Fred

Keep it up Fred! You are already past the hardest part, the first few days.

I finally quit smoking in 2002. Tried patches, gum, medication. Finally, bought a punching bag :boxing so I could work out my frustrations. Side benefit is I actually got in shape at the same time. I think the exercise helped me to stay away from the smokes.

Well, today is day number 7 of non smoking. It has not been easy, but has not been too bad. I still get the 'urge' here and there, but no thanks. Thanks for all the positive replies, believe it or not, they did help me out.

Have a good weekend my fellow Geeks!

Fantastic, Fred . . . the vast majority of people never make it to the end of the first week. You are already ahead of the pack (pun intended).

You have a lot to be proud of - it isn't easy or fun to quit smoking, and you are well on your way to success!! Well done, Sir!
