Yesterday, the subject of nascar came up in the chatbox, which got me to thinking, why not try a "Racing Thread".

Seeings how this is an 'international' lounge, we can't limit it to nascar, but, we should stick to legal or sanctioned racing, also, please no hating, rivalry is one thing, hating is another. So, let's see how this goes,,,,,,,,,

First thing that should be mentioned-- Scott Kalitta, may he rest in peace :(

OK,,my favorites are Moto GP, Formula 1, and Nascar, in that order, but any racing thrills me :drool

    Soooo,,,, GEEKS!!!!,,, START,,,,YOUR,,,,,ENGINES!!!!!!!!!!;)

    Nice topic Scorer

Well the French F1GP ended earlier with a new change in the leader board with Pelipe Massa taking over form Robert Kubica as the championship leader, the race I feel would have easily been won by Kimi Räikkönen bar the exhaust breaking issue.

Think the McLaren team again made some really bad decisions with regard to Lewis Hamilton, who I still despite the press hailing him as the next Ayerton Senna is by far no where near the racing legend, this season his lack of experience is now showing and in an interview on ITV before the race it just compounded my view that he has taken his quick stardom and become a premadonna. They should have definatly told him to give th eplace back to Vettel at the chicane pass illegal move, and I have no doubt he would have passed Vettel within next two laps, but the decision not to let Vettel past, caused the drive trough penalty which all but killed off Lewis's chances of points!

Best drives of the day where from Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen 3rd and 4th respectively behind the Ferrari duo.

So with 10 races left its all to play for as the leaderboard is close between 5 drivers,

1 Felipe Massa Brazilian Ferrari 48
2 Robert Kubica Polish BMW Sauber 46
3 Kimi Räikkönen Finnish Ferrari 43
    4 Lewis Hamilton British McLaren-Mercedes 38
5 Nick Heidfeld German BMW Sauber 28

so bring on the British GP and looking forward to the hight race in Singapore.

@ halo,, thanx, but, :mad I'm recording it NOW, while watching the indy iowa race. We don't get F1 here much, so when I do I tape it, I don't really have a driver, but F1 over all is intense. Now that I have the net, I'll be able to follow it better

Ooops! Sorry Scorer on revealing the result, will remember that for next time.

Would be kinda the same as NASCAR and INDY are shown here in early hours of morning, so I do same in recording them.

Like most Motor Sports from F1, Indy, NASCAR to Word Rally Series, GT Series and Superbikes.

They have a huge weekend in October every year at Bathurst NSW. They are loud, fast and pretty:-D, does it show I'm female:eek:. Be nice now fellas.

If there was a group like AA for race junkies my family would probably make me go.:-D I used to go to dirt track, NHRA, motorcycle & even demolition Derby's every chance I got. I used to stand in the pits @ Lancaster right at the start line...WOW! what a rush!! Oh Lord...monster trucks too..*sniff, sniff* If it has an engine and goes vroom broom I'm hooked.:cry

I passed my addiction on to my children.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v173/star17abby/Smilies/yikes4.gif I just can't get enough of it...I'll sit and watch a race....like today's race at Sanoma?...and what do I do? I tape it as I'm watching it in case I miss anything due to a phone call or whatever. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v173/star17abby/Smilies/thud.gif

@ AbbySue - I hear you on the passing along the addiction thing, my generation z offspring has already got a taste for LOUD ROCK music, am trying real hard not to turn her into a rev head also - too late for me unfortunately, I'm hopelessly lost.

@ scorcer - a couple of linkies for you - http://www.v8supercar.com.au/ - this is the official site.

and http://www.v8supercar.com.au/content/bathurst1000/ - this site is about race in October - there isn't much on it yet, the map of the track is interesting although it does not show how steep the track actual is. The race goes for 161 laps of the circuit.

    Hope you enjoy.

@ Halo-- ok I finished the race, yeah hamilton goofed, and I have to agree about Kovalianen, he was throwing that car thru the chicanes. But, Räikkönen finishing 2nd, with a broken exhaust, now thats something. Fox, a network here, is going to carry the F1 series I guess, at least they're going to show the July 6th race in england, that'll give me time to catch up.

@ dnnyo- did you catch that? Sunday, July 6th, FOX Network, 10 am PST/ 1pm EST Formula 1,

@ Abby :-D, when I go to the outlaws, have to sit up front, so you can feel the dirt, wear the dirt, and taste the dirt :yum. Oh,and don't feel bad, we have both tv's and the recorder going because the wife feels the same way, might miss something. She's a BIG Jeff Gordon fan, I keep tellin her Tony Stewart is the MAN, ;)

The one event would have to be F1, starting to now get back the the great driver days of the 80s where driver aids are banned, traction control made it too easy, next season will be different again with the move back to slick tyres and less aero packages.

However I have seen the IoM TT a few times over the years live as its only a 20min plane or 50min boat trip to the island..... if you love bikes then with all the folk from various Euro countries that make the trip to see the race its a great atmosphere.

whoa, you must be psychic, I was going to ask you what you thought of no TCS and the tire change. Thats aomething I really like about F1, by changing those kinds of things it keeps the engineers on their toes, also the fact that they don't stop the race cuz a few raindrops fall. And on a seperate level is the beauty of the body work, all slightly different. I know the ferari's look like jets ready to fly, and I think the renault's look like alien spaceships.

You know I was joking about spoiling the race, ;) but now I'm :mad because your that close to MY dream! :-D

@dnnyo- no prob, it's rare over here, got to get it when you can

@jamiko- rally racing is great, have you seen Travis Pasterino(sp?), the X games guy, he's been driving a suburu rally, and competing in the baja series also. You might like paramonks type here's a clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Iw9PBofK_8

Yes I have had a chance to sit down and talk to Travis Pastrana a few times at some of the US events. He is a great guy and knows how to promote himself and the sport. He always takes time to talk to kids and sign autographs and he is very humble. A natural talent as well. I wish him well as he competes on events all over the world now.

    hahhaah Scorer, psychic... maybe!

Yes rain affected races are exciting to say the least, it really needs a massive downpour to stop the race and in many cases they just bring out the safety car for a while. Pitstops do also make it a team race and not just the driver, especially with having to use two differnt tires per race, have to make the right choice on when to use the not so optimum tire compound.

This maybe of interst to you, in being the FIAs 2009 rule changes in full http://www.fia.com/resources/documents/1151088479__2009_F1_TECHNICAL_REGULATIONS.pdf plus the wiki synopsis of the rules http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_Formula_One_season

I thought it was amature hour! how can a professional driver and team, who have folk who read the rules and have them etched on their retina, not know that while the SC was on the pit straight the pitlane is closed and the red light was on. Persoanally when watching it I actually thought ok, the brakes on those things are awsome so he will stop, he will stop, heee wiiillll stoppp.... crunch, OK he didnt!

Cannot even blame it on the accelleration of the car causing him to close on the BMW and Ferrari that where stationary as they are next to last garage at far end of pitlane!

I would love to have seen look on Lewis's face at the moment of impact, pitty for helmets and dark visors ;)

thought you racing fans would like this - if you put the code "DALEWINS" into the form at AMPEnergy.com, you can get your name on dale earnhardt jr.'s car at the AMP Energy 500. he's putting the first 70,000 names on his car. i thought that was a pretty cool way to give back to his fans. i'm also kind of hoping my name pops up on screen.

Well it's friday, let's talk Nascar

This weekend it's New Hampshire, for the Sprint & Nationwide series, Craftsman trucks are in Memphis

anybody who's seen any race at New Hampshire knows the answer to that one:-D
But the big concern is the new cars and the new aero package, lack of left weight, and the taller, wider car,,, should be some bumpin' :cool
    here's the story http://www.nascar.com/2008/news/features/06/26/ccc.gmartin.cbowyer.loudon/index.html

    Team changes in 09

It's a done deal, Casey mears is out of the #5 Hendricks car at the end of the season,,,this is from Rick Hendrick,,

So, with that news, and the talk at Joe Gibbs, anybody want to place a bet an who's gonna be in the #5 next year?????

Interesting all the changes coming about again. TBH, I didn't think Tony would ever leave Gibbs.

As for the 5 car I wouldn't mind seeing Truex jump in it. I think he's a good driver and although he's doing better this year I think he'd do better leaving DEI.

  35. scorcer

Here, don't want you to cry alone:cry:cry I'm twice as sad as you, I can't watch it

Tony has always worked with Dale Jr, Jimmie and Jeff G., even at times, sacrificing his team mates. I'll bet you he's tired of having to struggle through the beginning of the season

I'd like to see it, Hendricks would be unstoppable;)

  36. AbbySue

:pLOL I'm terrible....I have to watch it all.:( Sometimes during the week if I get really bored and decide to watch TV I watch the re-runs of the races...

Good points! Tony has gone out of his way to work with the drivers mentioned. And, he seems to be having a much rougher start this year.

    Agreed on the un-stoppable!

Curious what your thoughts are on Kyle Busch? He's a driver I have a love/hate relationship with. He really is a phenomenal driver...he can drive anything and bring it to the front. He seems to be a bit more mature this year even though he still suffers from foot in mouth syndrome from time to time. LOL

I think he'll continue to rise as far as driving goes and hope to see him continue to mature. But then again, look how many people had the same type of relationship with Dale Sr....he said whatever was on his mind too!

  37. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

  38. scorcer

    scorcer ajMro keGe

    I'll break that in two,,

Kyle has potential, he is putting Toyota on the map, not to say Tony and Denny wouldn't have, (they are both having great seasons), Kyle is driving on a full tank of tetosterone, he's young and he knows that nowadays you have to jump in running, or else you fade to the back. Examples: Jeff Gorden, Dale Jr., Jimmie Johnson, Denny Hamlin, all came into Nascar winning races, I won't throw Tony in that category because he came from open wheel, plus, he's just in a class of his own ;)

    Everything fell into place perfectly,
1.Bobby LaBonte retiring opened the door for Kyle to drive for Gibbs after showing he can win with the right equipment at Hendricks, it would have been a push otherwise, Gibbs wouldn't have gotten rid of Denny for Kyle
2.Dale Jr.'s turmoil at DEI all he needed was a place to go worthy of leaving his dad's nameske Co., and the Bud sponsership, Taa Daa opening at Hendricks, still a chevy, great team, great sponsers. You gotta admit, he has a lot of fans, that means a chance they wont follow his lead,BIG risk
3.This is going to sound wierd, but Waltrips failure in the Toyota meant Toyota was willing to dump a BIG chunk a change to be seen as competitive. Remember all the "thats not 'merican, ain't havin' no dern furen cars in nascar":-D Well, everyone loves a winner, so Toyota must have been willing to pay to be driven by winners and a proven team, think Gibbs decided to go Toyota for the image boost?

With all that said, what happens next,???
Tony was VERY vocal last year when asked about the rumors of the Chevy/Toyota switch.
Hendricks is now a team of drivers(-Mears), that doesn't need to carry each other and skilled at working together, without tearing each other up, Tony HATES to be wrecked, especially by his teammates.(the only driver that Tony doesn't mind being wrecked by is Harvick:confused)

    Now, the Dale Sr. part,,,
Dale Sr. was in a time that is no more, these new cars don't lend themselves to that old style of competing, it use to be that bumping is racing, there's still some nudging, but start literally knocking someone in the wall and see how long it lasts, the days of race after race of retribution racing is gone.
Now, Kyle Busch running his mouth, wrecking sometimes, and winning as much as he does, is putting the name TOYOTA all over the place, for that I am sure they are willing to keep paying big.

Whew!, this is way, way more than I planned on.

IMO, Tony will be in the driver seat of a Hendricks car, back in a Chevy(which doesn't matter to me), but who his sponser will be is anyones guess, all I know is, it won't be Home Depot, not with Lowe's already there.

Finally, you have to admit, Jimmie, Jeff, Dale Jr., and Tony would be a force to be reckoned with.;)

PS- found out the local station is carrying the Nationwide race on Sat WOO HOO :D

    http://www.nascar.com/2008/news/headlines/cup/06/27/gbiffle.cbowyer.notes/index.html

from the bottom of the story--
I guess Tony does have another viable destination, we'll have to see if he chooses his bond with Harvick, or the tried and true consistant success of Hendricks

This one deals with Casey Mears moving on, the article mentions Tony , Ryan Newman, and Martin Truex, all potential replacements for Mears at Hendricks, and how their decisions will play heavily on what's left available for Mears
    http://www.nascar.com/2008/news/headlines/cup/06/27/cmears.out.hendrick/index.html

Lastly, Nascar Trackpass is offering the Live in car audio, of all the drivers in the Lenox Indust. Tools 301, for free.
I clicked on it, to see the registration requirements, seems like there is none, window opened directly to the driver selection screen, hmmm, something for nothing , hope it's not too good to be true

There's this great new deal on the Nascar site for watching the Sprint races called "Race Buddy".

Basically you get 4 screens. One is the view from inside the car of the most voted for race driver - last week it was Tony's :-D The other three screens are all different angles of the track. So I got to actually be in Tony's car for all of last week's race - and he would have won had Kyle Busch not done his usual screwing up of things. What's with that guy of recent? Doesn't he know we go round the track anti-clockwize yet?

  47. scorcer

    scorcer ajMro keGe

    @ Lev, lucky you rolleyes

at least I get that free in car audio that nascar. com is offering, and I get ALL the drivers audio :p, that's right ALL the AUDIO, I can just picture it now,,,, cuz that's all I'll be able to do tomorrow, is picture it :cry

I say Kyle's driving on a FULL tank of tetosterone, but Tony showed him today, that was actually a good race, sorta looked like a cup race from a few years ago, Tony was driving like he does when the second half of the season comes around.

On the 'race buddy' where do you watch it, pc or tv? Is it like the track pass?

  48. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

PC, and yes...it is like track pass but free and no audio. So I tend to have the TV running in the background for the audio and then 4 screens on the PC. You get it as Nascar.com for Sprint races.
