Radeon X800XL AGP Graphics Problems

Hey guys,
I've got a Radeon X800XL AGP 256 MB video card with a Samsung Syncmaster 912N LCD monitor (1280x1024, 70 Hz Max resolution). As far as I know, I should be pretty well off for games even at their highest settings. My computer is a Dell Dimension 8300 with 2.66 GHz, plenty of RAM, and good overall settings.

However, I have been having major stuttering issues while playing Half-Life 2 and even Madden NFL 2006. During the games, the graphics are great but the picture does not flow smoothly. I have only been having this problem lately. I already played and beat Half-Life 2 in August I believe and I had no problems. Somehow, my card seems like it's a Radeon 9800 or something. I would appreciate any help to address this problem. Thanks.

 

I just did some testing and found that no matter what resolution or video option settings I use ingame, from the lowest settings to the maximum settings, I still have this stuttering problem with my picture. Pretty frustrating, especially because I went out and bought a Radeon X800XL for a lot of money. I'm starting to wonder if this could a be monitor problem?

check for the latest driver or if you have the latest driver try reinstalling it. if problem persists try rolling back a driver or 2 . hope that helps

 

Well, I am running the latest drivers and I really don't feel comfortable rolling back the drivers. I'm not sure if that would do any good, but I could see how it would cause problems if it went wrong. Don't get me wrong, I have your advice in the back of my mind, but I want to try fixes first before major changes.

After looking around seems your not the only one having problems.
Looks like X800XL dont like the latest drivers (try Google "X800XL drivers problems" & "X800XL Stuttering")

Many have solved similar problems running Omega drivers:

One other thing that can cause issue is a Weak PSU, your system being a Dell, I would suspect that may very well be your problem? but I dont know just a guess.

actually of the first things i did when i bought this card was contact dell technical support and find out about my PSU...turns out it's good enough for the card. the problem with rolling back drivers is that i haven't really done it before and i don't want to screw up.

 

Download and run Driver Cleaner to remove any video drivers you find:

Then you might try the Omega drivers, or maybe an earlier version of the ATI Catalyst drivers.

 

i did all that driver cleaner stuff properly and installed the omega drivers, but i get the same problem. is the next option to driver clean again and this time install the earliest drivers possible from the ati radeon x800xl CD?

 

One other thing... Assuming you have Windows XP, do you have Service Pack 2 installed? ATI recommends SP2 for the catalyst drivers.

Now, there are probably only one set of drivers on the CD. Here is a list of drivers for Radeon cards. Try going backward one version at a time and see if any of them improve the performance:

But, if I were you, I'd call the manufacturer. Sometimes they are no help, but if it is a well known problem then they will have a fix for it.

 

i do have the windows xp sp2. i guess my only option is to go back and use the earliest drivers.
