Hey there fellow geeks and geek-ets,

Just after a bit of info on the various raid setups - inparticular a general over view of the effects of Hard Drive file fragmentation.

I'm thinking, the less drives in an array the bigger the fragmentation effect..?:confused

If one has a raid1 or raid5 array what would be the difference in latency effect for file fragmentation. - Assuming both arrays had the same cluster size etc..
Just an over view, few lines would be good...:-D

Other general info on raid and fragmentation would be awesome.

    Hi

TBH in the years I have used Raid I've not seen it fragment any worse than none Raid, Raid 1 as it's a mirror will just copy the fragmentation that's occured on the main array drive, Raid 5 striping with parity will just be same although it's not a Raid array I would suggest as it can be difficult to rebuild in the event of a failure in one of the drives over Raid 1

Cluster sizes would be set equal when you enter the controller to set the Raid type, cluster and member disks, but if you did add a new member drive which had different cluster size it could affect I/O speed so not advisable.

What would you be using this Raid array for? as Raud arrays have minimum member disks Raid 1 is 2, Raid 5 is 3

    Some info

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/raid (at bottom of this are some links to pages, blogs on fragmentation etc)

    Cheers Halo,

Looking at some options, figuring fragmentation will have a part to play in restoring a drive, trying to decide the best setup to aviod time delays in rebuilding a drive(s) array.

Just doing some homework, I'll follow up on the links you have provided, thank you:) for answering my querry.
