    hi,

i recently bought x2 512 high performace RAM

i have 4 RAM slots (2 black slots 2 blue slots, i dont know why)

i have x2 256 ram 1 in each of the black slots. (works default RAM)

put the new RAM into the blue slots, booted up, (seemed to boot fine)
    but no screen on.

took the RAM out again, worked fine and screen came back on.

i have tried every slot possible every combination possible (as far as im aware)

so currently i have x2 512 high performace RAM in each of the black slots

    i only want (x2 256, x1 512) installed

as my dad wanted the other one,

he put the RAM into his computer (1 of 2 HI-RAM 512) worked fine!

how come my computer doesnt like the 1 RAM on its own?

if i havent made this fully clear, feel free to ask more in depth :)

    Thanks very much!

You have black and blue slots to indicate what slots memory should be installed in to achieve 'dual-channel mode', which allows for more data to be transferred to and from RAM in a given amount of time. See this link for more information.

Unfortunately, RAM must be identical in size and speed for this to work. When you have a non-identical stick of RAM in another slot, you break the configuration.

Would it be possible for you to keep the 2 512 sticks, and give your dad the two 256 sticks? Then you both can have a dual-channel config (assuming his motherboard supports it)

    when i installed x2 hi-RAM and x2 default RAM

it doesnt like that either :S it wont boot, its even,

all 4 have to be the same?

overall RAM between me and my dad:
    =============================

    x2 512MB HI-RAM
    x3 256 RAM
    x1 512 RAM

    he has 3 slots
    i have 4

my pc doesnt even like x2 256 x1 512 (same RAM make etc)

so in order to get full use, id have 2 buy another 256MB RAM?

    i use x4 256RAM

    and dad use x2 512 HI-RAM and x1 512MB RAM? lol :cry

Are all of these the same speed? If not that could be your problem. I would try the 2x512 hi in your comp using the black slots. But check you manual and it should tell you which ones you need to use. They are generally labelled A1, A2, B1, B2. To run dual channel you would use A1 & B1. You did not list your motherbord specs so I could not look it up.
