i have an old computer that the mobo says it uses pc-133 168 pin memory

can i use faster memory if its the same amount of pins?
(because its outdated that stuff costs so much more its crazy!)

    got another question here

its got 3 slots for ram
    with 256 in it already
can i put another 256 stick and a 512 in there?

    Yes you can...

Yes you can get RAM modules of different sizes, eg 256 + 512 + 1Gb, etc but you want to make sure that they are all at the same "speed" not to be confused with SPD (Serial Presnce Detector chip which is more associated with "timings"). Onboard RAM will only go as fast as your slowest module, i.e. if you have 1 RAM module rated at 166MHz and another rated at 133MHz and 1 rated at 100MHz all of the RAM will be clocked to 100MHz (the slowest speed) and you would be better off leaving the 100MHz out or expect to have slowed memory.

PCC 133 is the fastest 168 pin ram you can find, sorry but thats your best bet. Might local shops sometimes have specials as its older and they don't use/sell much of it any more.

Well done a very important "fact" I overlooked is the limitations of the motherboard and thus dictation of the potential size of each memory module. Cheers to both above for the very valid input.

thanks a ton for the link wyatt earp
does anyone have any feelings or suggestions about name brand?
is there any compatability\stability\operational issues with any brands or whatnot?

    did this search at newegg

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...=ENE&Description=pc+133+sdram+168-pin&Ntk=all

im thinking the cheapest stuff, and wondered what everyone thought (i couldnt believe the price range 22-100 $, thats wild)

Well after your first intial post I think any "value select" RAM will do the job as long at is at the right price and has a warranty (1-2 years). Higher priced quality RAM is only really useful if you are intending to push components a bit, eg. OC the CPU, etc but as it is an old PC why spend to much money if you may have to upgrade the whole thing in the future.

The Kingston and Muskin are both good brands but it comes done to your budget.

yeah im not looking to make something amazing outta this ole thing, just something that will get the job done.
im in the market for a new computer (going back and forth over laptop or desktop) and just want this computer as a second, but it is in desperate need of memory.

one more question and i'll let this thread die

i can use ECC memory even if i dont have it enabled right?

  18. Clark_Kent

    Clark_Kent MajorGeek

yes, but ECC cost more then NON-ECC why do you want to do this ???

i found some kingston ecc mem at newegg that was cheaper than everything else, and with no shiping and handling!

Looks good I know I can certainly use ECC on my mobo and it allows me to increase the otherwised specified amount (eg. 2Gb for non-ecc but >2Gb if ecc)
