Couple three er four things come to mind

How much mem does your Puter support?
    Got open mem slots?
One would want to add memory that is of the same speed & supports the same timmings of the existing memory of the system!

If one was to provide thier system specs, that would help to find solution's or answers:p

the current ram in my system is the ultra 512 listed below...there are two available spots for memory on my motherboard...i looked through the specs of the off-brand and they were identical

There is probably little difference between the different brands. Neither of them are really 'name-brand' RAM. If you have a motherboard that can run dual channel RAM, and want to do that, then I would go for the same identical stick of RAM. If not, then go with the cheaper one.

i always though the Ultra was considered a top brand

If you play or want to play the newest games on your computer its a good idea to get as close to 2 gigs as possible. If you got the gig stick and the 256 for free then it should run real nice.
