I am gettign an NF7-S motherboard and I want to make sure the RAM that I get will work. I have found the compatible RAM list on Abit's web site http://www.abit.com.tw/abitweb/webjsp/test_report/NF7/02.php The problem I'm having is that I can't match the serial numbers on this web site to NewEgg's.

For example, I'm looking at this product http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-200-046&depa=1 and the serial number is N82E16820200046. I think that this is NewEgg's product number though. The specification of this RAM matches exactly to the one on Abit's web site but the product number isn't shown. How do I find the product number? Thanks for the help.

On Newegg, the Item# is Newegg's number. The Model# is the manufacturer's number.

And I agree you should try to get PC3200 RAM.

i have yet to hear of anyone having trouble with RAM that is not on the "compatible" list from the motherboard-- so long as it has the right specifications. and getting brand name is just more assurance, usually because they use more quality parts.

you should be safe with anything from corsair, ocz, kingston, geil, samsung (good cheap RAM), and some others.

look for a Cas Latency of at LEAST 2.5, if not 2 (lower is better)

and as has been mentioned, if you get pc3200, it's better for you

Depends what processor youre using. But getting the fastest ram possible for that setup (like da chicken says, PC3200) is a good idea.

and a NF7-S IS dual channel, because it uses the nForce2 chipset.
So get 2 modules instead of just one.

Is all of the tested memory on that web page standard? I searched newegg and only found one of about 15 that was PC3200 and 512 MB. Do they change the model or something weird like that? It just seems like they would list more popular RAM for a popular board like the NF7-S. I can find RAM that is the same size and speed by the manufacturers on Abit's web site, but the model numbers barely ever match. So I was thinking that maybe they change the model number with a revision. But when I searched, I took off the last three or four characters of the model number and sarched again if something wasn't found the first time.

Does newegg have a bad selection or I am doing something wrong? All of the other parts I want are at newegg and I want to get the cpu, motherboard and ram from the same place. Any ideas why there isn't more of a selection from newegg?

It doesnt really matter, any ram with a brand name (kingston, crucial, corsair even) will work fine.

I know that all the brands work if they are on the list but I can't match the ones on the list to newegg. Of all of the models on the list from Abit that were PC3200 and 512MB newegg only had one. Shouldn't there be more supported types of RAM?

yes and the answers above are correct if you get PC3200 from a main manufacturer you will be fine......

those Module and Chip S/N on Abits site are not necessarily an actual model/product number, the majority of the time they are the actual chip model/SN numbers .... that go upto make a memory module.

eg. in this pick of a Kingmax the sicker has a serial number as well as other numbers..... but then look closely at the actual chips themselfs and you will see a number more like the ones at Abits test page and thats what most of those test S/N numbers are.

So would it be safe to conclude that if the speed, size, and manufactor match Abit's web site the RAM will work? Or do manufacturers make multiple models that are PC3200 and 512 MB?

I hope i don't seem too picky but I bought the wrong RAM once and I wasn't too happy. Kbyte RAM doesn't seem to work with many motherboards. Or at least the ones I tried it on. Maybe they mean K-mart? :p

1st Q ........ yes and yes there are some different versions of the same speed modules... but the difference is mainly the CL and Quality by quality I mean how the modules are tested some are tested more rigorlesly than others, you can get single modules or you can get a matched pair, a matched pair is a must if you are using Dual DDR mobo IMO.

2nd Q ....... well no not really you just want to get things right and thats understandable, what I do is to research a bit use google to look for reviews on that mobo and you will get an idea as to what memory they are using in there test systems. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=abit+NF7-S+review

I've never seen brand name RAM be incompatible with a modern board like the NF7.

in other words... if its a known brand... it WILL work 99.99% of the time.
