Hello fellas, I am recent entry to majorgeek dot com,
Some days earlier I downloaded a speedbit video accelerator version from a data keeping site, little did i know that I am going to enter a virus named Ramnit C into my computer. The avira antivirus started giving notifications after every 5 minutes, my system is XP professional, the most probable solution i had is to reformat my boot drive of harddisk but in the current scenario, I cant do it because of a corrupt dvd writer and i have no substitute to it. As i googled other solutions to this problem, I found out majorgeek best in regards of response. So I searched out the major geek site for the solutions, passed through the read and run me first malware removal and tried to carried out each and every step as i could ..
I have gone through the installation of first three of the softwares mentioned, and one of them didnt work .. "Combofix" i tried it three times .. first it stalled at 16th step even after keeping precautions .. then 2nd time it stalled at 4th and now .. it is not starting autoscan at all .. i tried to increase my virtual memory, I have 1 GB real memory, and now working on the next software .."root repeal" ... Please guide me so that I can get rid of this virus without reformating my system .. plus .. I will be attaching the logs gained from SAS and MBAM soon enough... awaiting for a useful response. Thanks in advance.

Please go here and do three scans ibn a row. Reboot after each scan and then attach the log from each scan:

    eSet Online Scan.

As the quote said ... well I would love to reformat the pc and make it uptodate again but the problem here is I cant do it because of the dvdram damaged here, if you can tell me of any bootable option i ll be glad to do but it will remove all the data on my disk .. so the only option suitable for me is to fix it .. please guide me through.

I will be posting the eset logs soon

We can try, but it will depend on the eset logs. If the virus has spread to a point where it becomes impossible to fix, your only choice will be to reimage your computer. Either from the backup image, which will remove everything and take you back to factory settings or by contacting your manufacturer and requesting an install disc.

Disc is not an option here as the dvd rom is not working, it is already a laptop so getting a new dvd rom for it will cost me alot .. please guide me if there is any other way to boot, thru usb slot or something .. it will be a great help .. I am also scanning it by eset anyways ..

You may need to get an external dvd device. Most are fairly inexpensive, but as to usb devices, you should ask about that in the software or hardware forum. Let's see the first three eset scans before we get ahead of ourselves. That will determine how serious the infection is at this point and whether or not it is fixable.

Thanks for your reply TimW .
I asked for the usb solution in software section .. the scan is upto 17% and the infected files reached the value of 667 .. i hope thats fixable .. if it comes out to be unhelpful, then usb solution will be the only solution .. and if it is fixed then thanks to you and your team .. and usb solution will be an increase in my knowledge.

I am afraid so. Esp if subsequent scans continue to show that kind of massive file infections. :(

You will need to explore that in the software forum. It is outside the scope of the Malware forum.

And you are most welcome. So sorry to have had to tell you the bad news.
