okay so i was getting a message everytime i tried to open internet explorer, firefox, and probably any .exe that said to choose which program to use to open the app. it never used to ask this and i know its not supposed to. so i chose to use the web to find the appropriate program. so i read that this could be a registry problem. ok simple enough , right? ccleaner registry scan here i come. scanned for issues, 147 found. fix all selected issues, yes. backup registry (heres probably where i really #$%@#* up) i chose no. 147 issues fixed. now i try to open any app and i get this message:"the file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. please install a program, or if one is already installed create an association in the default programs control panel". im running windows 7. please help!

CCleaner probably didn't cause the problem. The 147 issues most likely are unrelated.

I'd give the exe fix in this thread a try. The thread has been active for more than a year and the original poster still reads replies if you have any problems.

If you can create a restore point using System Restore do it before merging the file with the registry to have a go back plan if it doesn't work. If you can't use System Restore then I would just try the fix--you don't have much to lose.
