I have read the previous posts concerning the same issue and have run the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64 and have attached the FRST.txt document below. What do I need to do next? Thanks,

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Download this >> View attachment fixlist.txt

Save fixlist.txt to your flash drive.
    • You should now have both fixlist.txt and FRST64.exe on your flash drive.
Now reboot back into the System Recovery Options as you did previously.
Run FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait.
The tool will make a log on the flashdrive (Fixlog.txt).
Please attach this to your next message. (See how to attach)

Now boot see if you can boot into normal Windows.

Pure genius! I ran the FRST64 and clicked "Fix" once. Here's the resulting fixlog.txt file.

Windows rebooted perfectly in normal mode. This is my daughter's laptop, and her college classes start on Monday, so this was a life saver. Thanks again for all your help!

You're welcome. Okay based on some items I saw in the FRST log, it would be a very good idea for you to run thru the below full cleaning process now to make sure it is really clean.

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

Thanks. I ran the full clean routine and everything seemed to be fine. Now, a couple of days later, we're having trouble with the computer "freezing up" - particularly when on the interenet. A couple of times, it required removing the battery to re-boot. Any thoughts? Thanks, again,

    Jim

    You're welcome.
Yes, please finish following the instructions and attach the logs that were requested if you were still having problems. ;) Problems may or may not have anything to do with malware. Without tee logs, we cannot say.

My bad on not attaching the logs - I believe this is all the logs mentioned. I look forward to your instructions. Thanks,
    Jim

Uninstall the below very old versions of software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7

Please download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
    • Run OTM.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).
    • Copy the lines from the below codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C
(or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy): Do not include the word Code: which is just a title line of
      the code box
    Code:

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [EmptyTemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar
      ) and choose Paste.
    • Now click the large http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MoveIt!.png button.
    • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
    • Close OTM.
Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be
saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach
this log file to your next message.

Now please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Note: That JRT may reset your home page to a google default so you will need to restore your home page setting if this happens.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles log
    • the JRT.TXTlog
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

OK, I removed the old Java, ran the tools, and have attached the logs below. The computer isn't freezing up totally anymore. I still have some trouble on YouTube with Shockwave Flash. The videos will get choppy and i get a pop up "Warning: Unresponsive PlugIn". The warning says "Shockwave Flash may be busy or it may have stopped responding." I have two options - continue or stop the plug-in - either optin seems to have the same result. The player will resume for a few minutes, and the error will recur. I look forward to your further advice. Thanks,

    Jim

Which browser are you using? I assume Firefox? Try IE and see how it works.

    Uninstall the below programs:
    Open It!
    Web Cake 3.00

  11. JTfree50

    JTfree50 Private E-2

Yes, I was running Firefox. Tried IE, and had no problems - still have problems with YouTube on Firefox. I tried to uninstall the two programs in Control Panel, and got error on both saying "unable to uninstall" and that the programs may have already been uninstalled. However, a search in Windows Explorer still shows "Open It" in applications. Web Cake only shows up on the logs from JRT and MGLogs. Not sure how to be sure they are gone. Thanks,

    Jim

Please run the below to see if it fixes your Firefox issues:

    Reset Firefox to Defaults

The below registry patch should remove Open It and Webcake from the installed programs list.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

  13. JTfree50

    JTfree50 Private E-2

Looks like that did it! Reset Firefox and had a success message in adding to the registry. Things seem to be back to normal now. Thanks again for all your hard work!:)

    You're welcome.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others) and running MGclean.bat did not remove them, you can delete these files now.
    7. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    8. If you are running Win 8, Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below to flush restore points:
      • Refer to the instructions for your WIndows version in this link: Disable And Enable System Restore
      • What we want you to do is to first disable System Restore to flush restore points some of which could be infected.
      • Then we want you to Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

It looks like we're still having some problems with videos, even using IE. Videos will skip & halt on various sites and iTunes is also having similar issues. Should I continue through the steps you listed last, or should we run more software first? Thanks,

    Jim

Your last logs were clean so this may not be due to malware. Please try the below on Firefox again and see what happens.

    Reset Firefox to Defaults

OK, thanks. We reset Firefox and are still having the same issues with audio and video playback on Pandora, iTunes, YouTube, etc. on both Firefox and Internet Explorer. On videos, the screen will temporarily "freeze" or 30 seconds to a minute or two before continuing to play. (The whole screen freezes, including the cursor, so its not just buffering of the video.) Other applications seem to be operating with no issues. Thanks,

    Jim

I'll give you a couple more scans to run and one tool to help repair some Windows settings but these problems are most likely an issue for the Software Forum.

Be patient while doing the below. The fixes can sometimes take quite awhile to run. Especially the permissions repairs. It may be best to kick it off and goto bed or do something else. It is better not to run anything while the repairs are going on.

Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
    • Now select the Start Repairs tab.
    • The click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Reset File Permissions
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
      • Repair Proxy Settings
      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished.

Now download and save a copy of combofix.exe and save it directly onto your Desktop folder.
    • Then right click on it and select Run As Administrator. Do not disturb it by clicking in the window that opens or it may stall.
    • After it finishes, it may reboot your PC. Attach the C:\combofix.txt log that it creates.
    • If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up because you receive the following error:
      • Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion
    • Then you will need to reboot your computer which will normally fix this problem.

    Please download OTL by OldTimer.
    • Save it to your desktop.
    • Double-click on the OTL icon on your desktopto run it. (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8 use right-click and select Run as Administrator)
    • Check the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
    • Check the "Standard Output".
    • Change the setting of "Drivers" and "Services" to "All"
    • Copy the text in the code box below and paste it into the http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/66/otlcustomfix.png text-field.
      Code:
      activex

Finally made the time to run all the scans and have attached the logs below. Things run better, but still have some skipping / pausing on videos. At least the computer isn't totally freezing up like when we first started. Sounds like I may be off to the Software forum next. Thanks for all your help, and let me know if there's anything further we should do.

These logs are clean too. You problem is not malware. In reality it may be you. ;) I see both Norton Internet Security and Microsoft Security Client/Microsoft Antimalware installed. You need to choose one and uninstall the other.

Thanks! Glad to know that the malware isn't the problem anymore. It's not the first time (or likely the last) that I've been the problem :). I thought I had un-installed the Norton, but it doesn't like to be removed. I'll give it another try. Thanks again for all your help!

    You're welcome.

    GIve the below a try

    Norton Removal Tool 20.0.0.21

However I don't expect it to work. It always seems to leave a lot behind which requires manual cleanup.
