I am semi savy enough to get myself into a hole but not out. Here is the situation: My other laptop is a Sony Vaio, running Windows 7, 64-bit. I have had the Blue screen of death and the lapop would restart. I could not run my antivirus (McAfee). I downloaded Windows Defender Offline (WDO) from another laptop to a USB and then ran it by changing the BIOS setting. A scan found the following - TrojanClicker.ASX // Trojan.HTML/Redvetar // WIN64/Alurean.gem!A - WDO then cleaned the files and then I ran a full scan. Now the laptop will not boot. I can get to the BIOS and System Restore screens.
I have been unsuccessful in booting in any option. I tried Restore to last known configuration and no luck. After a try at repair system I viewed the details which are below-
    Details:
    Problem Signature
    Problem Event Name: StartupRapairOffline
    Problem Signature 01: 6.7.7600.16385
    Problem Signature 02: 6.1.7600.16385
    Problem Signature 03: unknown
    Problem Signature 04: 21200050
    Problem Signature 05: AutoFailover
    Problem Signature 06: 8
    Problem Signature 07: NoRootCause
    OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.1
    Local ID: 1033

I need some help to get this laptop running again. If possible back with the files on it - Yep I am one of those who did not back up their files rolleyes. Hard lesson learned, Need help.

Greetings, mirunning, and welcome to MajorGeeks.

First things first: to attempt to salvage your data you might try the steps listed in this current thread - both booting to a Linux distro and/or using a USB adapter to read your drive with another machine should produce results.

Be patient: I'm sure other MGs will jump in with suggestions.

Download and burn a Kaspersky image (google Kaspersky rescue disc) to CD and use that to boot your computer. If possible have your computer connected via a patch cable to your switch so it can update the AV definitions. Once your on the Kaspersky desktop update the AV definitions, set options to clean/disinfect/delete anything it finds and run a full and complete scan.

After you have this done and you've cleaned up your computer boot normally and update your McAfee AV. If you need a free AV there are a few to choose from. Two that I use from time to time are AVAST and AVG just google and use download sources from the manufacture sites. I'd also recommend running a full anti malware scan with something such as malware bytes.

Once this is done and your sure all files are clean, make a backup. I don't typically recommend backing up what might be possibly infected files unless there's possible hardware failure or you have an empty external HDD or Flash Drive to spare. If you backup before removing the malware please keep in mind you may spread that infection to any other computers you connect to. I'd highly recommend running a full and complete scan with an uncompromised AV on a clean computer. Using a VM in this instance is normally best to contain any possible infections spreading to live environments.

As you may well be aware by now keep a current backup of all your data. Do it at least once a month or more often if possible. A good way to do this is to connect an external HDD and run backup software to make a copy of your files. When your done disconnect the external drive and keep it in a safe place. Schedule and run regular AV scans and anti malware scans. Defrag regularly too.

    Good Luck :)

Your solution could be as simple as a bootrec fix. At least, it won't hurt to try.

If you have Windows 7, get the computer to go through startup repair again, and after it's done, choose advanced options, and start the command prompt. Navigate to the drive your OS is on (probably c: ). If you're not sure, navigate to c: (just type c: in the command prompt), and type "dir". You should see a windows folder.

    After that, type:
    bootrec /fixboot
    bootrec /fixmbr

You can also try bootrec /rebuildbcd (run that command from drive x: ), and a chkdsk could help, too (from x:, type chkdsk c: /f (where c: is your OS drive)).

    Good luck!

Ok, so here is where I am at right now. From Caliban's reply (dtd:11-07-13 11:35) I have completed his recommendations. From aidan80's reply (dtd:today) I was able to get to Kaspersky and saved it to a CD as a ISO file. I was unsuccessful in getting the laptop to boot from the CD drive, even after changing my BIOS settings to boot from the CD. In haste I then proceeded to complete the recommendations from catalize's reply (dtd:today)
through the Command Prompt and entered the recommendations. I am not able to replicate what the results were since it was of course on another laptop. In summary for each bootrec prompt I received (The operations completed successfully). For the last command prompt I received three replies for each stage and they indicated the following: stage 1 357632 file records processed. File verification complete // stage 2 418216 index entries processed. Index verification completed. // stage 3 357632 file SDs/SIDs processed. Security descriptor verification completed. 30293 data files processed. After that I tried a Restart, but I was redirected back to the window "Windows Error Recovery". I tried "Start Windows Normally" but it only loops be back. I also tried "Launch Startup Repair" no luck either. I am willing to try more ideas, or any suggestions on how to get the CD drive to boot.
