I just finished building a new comp, installed win xp pro and when i go under "my computer" there's a bunch of extra drives showing up. The drives are all empty, and upon clicking them it asks me to insert a drive.

I have a feeling it has to do with the sata slots on the mobo due to the fact that the number of drives directly correlates with the number of slots.

Mobo is an MSI k9a2 Platinum
    other specs include:

amd phenom 9950 quad core cpu
nvidia gforce 6800 gs (cant afford a newer card :( )
74 gig 10k rpm raptor (again cant afford anything better)
2 gigs ram (i hate being jobless)

any ideas what would cause the, for lack of a better name, ghost drives?

It looks like yours supports this hence the extra drive letters
