Ok, so I got some malware where it basically writes registry keys to both my HKEY_USERS\..\Run folders and my HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\..\Run folders, and these keys launch randomly named .dll files it places in my Windows\system32 folder. Then, my Firefox browser will randomly open new tabs for various random things while browsing, and my computer performs very sluggishly.

When I deleted the registry values, they came back nearly immediately, but i managed to get rid of them by disabling writing to the \Run folder and then deleting the bad values. Sure enough, the problem with the browser has ceased, but my computer still seems sluggish and slower than it was prior to the virus. Could this be because the initial malware infection is continually trying to write to the registry? Or why might this be? And most importantly, how can I get my computer back to normal without reformatting?!

I'll gladly post whatever you'd like, a HijackThis log or whatever, just tell me. If this can be taken care of with just a simple virusscan, what's a good FREE program for that?

    Thanks a ton!

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
    Notes:
    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
