    Hello,

I had malware problems a couple years ago and followed your guide and it worked beautifully. Unfortunately I am having problems again and I don't see any visible infections.

In the last couple months I started experiencing random crashes of my laptop. Previously these crashes were rare. Now they occur on average 1-2x per day. My laptop freezes and I am unable to enter commands via mouse or keyboard and am forced to hard restart. Usually occurs when I am doing something internet related such as web browsing, skype, or gaming.

These crashes started happening after I moved to my new place with a new internet connection, so this is why I suspect something has infected my pc.

Attached are my logs. Thanks for your help.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

I don't think your problem is malware. I think it is more likely due to that fact that you have filled up your harddisk and need to remove quite a bit of whatever you are storing on it. Your logs showed the below for drive C
    Code:
    Drive C:
    Description Local Fixed Disk
    Compressed No
    File System NTFS
    Size 184.84 GB (198,475,509,760 bytes)
Free Space 3.89 GB (4,180,508,672 bytes)
You need to free up at least another 15GB to allow for better performance.

Once you have removed enough to get your free disk space back up to about 18GB, come back and tell me if you are still having problems. We will dig deeper then but 1st you need more free space.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I transferred data to an external drive so have 20 gb free now on my laptop. I will update this topic if I still have similar issues.

Okay. Based on the frequency you stated in your 1st message, I would assume you would know within a day or 2.

Okay, that's bad newsm but you need to have more free space for sure. Let's run two more quick scans to look for possible other malware.

Goto the below link and follow the instructions for running TDSSKiller from Kaspersky
    • Be sure to attach your log from TDSSKiller

Now please also download MBRCheck to your desktop.

See the download links under this icon http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MGDownloadLoc.gif
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Was just a driver from installing Daemon Tools.

Your logs are clean. It does not appear that malware is the cause of your problems. I suggest that you look at your Event Viewer logs to see if you can find reasons for crashes. This is something you can work on in our Software Forum. Over the last couple years I have personally seen many cases where Windows Vista just needs to be reinstalled. Even a couple weeks ago, my son gave me one of his friends Sony Laptop with Vista SP2 on it. That had symptoms like you are describing. I only find some minor nuisance software on it. No malware. I tried many different things to see if I could get it to work properly. For awhile, it almost looked like bad memory and even a bad hard disk. In the end, I reinstalled it from the Factory Recovery partition and that resolved the problems.

Thanks for all your help, I was beginning to think it was an issue other than malware when I didn't find anything in the scans. I could reinstall Vista but my original Vista recovery dvds for my laptop are not available so this would be the last possible option.

I looked in your Software Forum but there is no similar guide to submitting your logs, specifically my event viewer logs. Should I just post new thread explaining my issues and go from there?

    You're welcome.
Check to see if you have a factory recovery partition. People in the Software Forum can help with this.

Yes just start a new thread and explain your problem. It may be helpful to attach the Event Viewer log. See the below:
