    Hey Major Geeks.

I started this thread in the Malware portion of your forum and the problem has lead to here as I fixed it before and it is now back with a vengeance so it seems.

I'm having a problem where I'm getting some odd lag spikes, they happen about every 20 seconds it seems and last for about 3-5 seconds.

I narrowed it down before to it being a UPnP problem and found a fix on Microsofts web page, I made a Dword in reg edit where Microsoft guided me to and it fixed it for a bit and it came back. Now that its back its affecting my main computer and my other computer next to me as before it was only affecting my main one.

As for some stats I am running a D-Link DI-624 router.

I'm on Road Runner High Speed Cable.

The old post from the Malware forum is located here:

I also have a recent Ethereal recording of all internet usage and can send it to you and or post it on here so you can view it.

Any help would be appreciated ASAP!

    Thanks,
    Elim

Ok so instead of giving me the run around why dont you help me fix the random lag spikes which are now all both of my machines not just my main machien which already has the proclaimed "fix" that isnt fixing any more. That thread has nothing to do with me or my issue.

Any new news on what it could be, seems like it isnt going away and I really need this solved.

Heres a screenshot I took of a recording in Ethereal, I believe in the green lines is where the lag spikes are occuring, what it is, I have no idea.

Link doesn't work, and there was no need to be rude to Steve, he was trying to unselfishly help you!

I totally agree with Insomniac, everybody here just tries to give the best advice they can, and even though it may not help solve your problem, we should always be Thankful that they have taken the time. If you slag someone that tries to help you will find that the ones who have your solution will not even bother posting to your thread. Remember:- Play nice your on Major Geeks

I wasnt "slagging" him at all. I'm trying to save his time as well as mine and even others as well. The link had nothing to do with my problem at all. So can we get back to trying to find a solution to this problem???

I would like to think you were not, but you might want to read what you posted above. It comes off as attitude. These guys help for free, often hours a day and deserve some respect for even trying. So, please type more carefully, it is easy for sarcasm or joking to come off wrong. Letters lack emotion, its eay to be misunderstood. Thank you.

Whos to say it didnt have a bearing on your issue as we are not infront of your PC its fairly difficult to determine some issues as not all information is supplied or actually known until asked, Matacumbies suggesting was valid as it could have actually been that linked game and in not being it rules one thought out of the list. Data packets can come from various sources, your own network or some software you have installed, constantly trying to or checking its connection, p2p is one example... do you use p2p?

long way around is to disable all running startup apps and test each one until the culprit is found... MSCONFIG can aid in this quest.

as you have a wireless router, have you secured your network ( WEP or WPA encryption keys setup on the router ) against neighbours attaching to your wireless connection?

It can't be anyone else, as I explained before, I recorded a 6 minute stream of internet activity and received one specific line of me sending something to a destination.

I researched the IP destination and lead to a post with a bunch of people who had the same problem as I did.

I found a fix for it through Microsofts page as holding "UPnP" to blame. I put the fix in and my computer was fine.

Now out of the blue this computer is acting up receiving the same messages as before in my Ethereal recording and now on both of my computers.

Does your cpu usage spike when the lag spikes occur? If so your router may be a little to far away from your pc, also when was the last time you cleared your router history or reset your router, that often makes things run smoother.

Yah I've actually been trouble shooting today and narrowed it down to the router. I was looking in the logs and I've seen this for the past few days and haven't had time to trouble shoot it and today I did.

Basically the farthest wireless computer downstairs has been sending for a while "Wireless PC connected" I traced it back to this computer using the MAC address and then seeing the computers name.

I can't figure out why it's doing this. We turned the computer off and the spikes disappeared, so I am sure this is the problem.

I am on a D-Link DI-624. We already did virus, adware and etc scans and it didn't resolve the problem, any ideas?
