Random lagging that I can't pinpoint

In random intervals, I would get the sound that you get when you connect/disconnect hardware (i.e. plugging in external HD). It lasts for a few seconds and freezes my mouse movement while making that sound. It plays the sound of connecting first and then immediately the sound of disconnecting in those few seconds.

There is no regular pattern to it. I also don't see an icon that shows that an hardware is being connected or anything like that.

I'm puzzled at this. Does someone know why this is occurring?

Is your mouse a USB mouse?

Yes, it's a wired USB HP (GW405AA) brand mouse.

It seems that maybe the USB port is disconnecting then reconnecting the mouse for some strange reason.
To troubleshoot, first try a different USB port. If it seems to do the same thing, try another mouse. If you don't have a 2nd mouse, you may be able to borrow one from a friend for a few hours to see if the weird behavior still occurs.

Plugging the mouse into different USB ports didn't stop the lag. I finally found a spare mouse lying around and there was no lag. I guess the HP mouse is a goner? Thanks for helping me pinpoint the problem.
