Every other week, my internet connection seems to get really really slow for about 12-24 hours. I was thinking that it probably had something to do w/ my modem because my ISP said that they were not working in my area. When this happens, my "Cable" light on my modem blinks on-and-off every 20 seconds or so.

Do I need a new modem? Its about 6 years old... :(

Typical when the cable light blinks it means one of 2 things, your loosing sync from the cable provider, or activity, In this case sounds like losing sync from cable. But as most cable providers are now using Docsis 2.0 you may also wanna upgrade your modem to help with the issue. As cable modems are fairly cheap, i would recommend both contacting your isp, and possibly replacing the cable modem.

Well first to check for any outages or issues in the area. Second to check on any recommended modems if you do decide to upgrade. The reason you want a supported modem is many times if they didn't provide the modem they are very not likely to trouble shoot, instead blaming it on the equipment. Sorry shoulda been more clear.
