I noticed someone else posted in this forum with the same problem, but no resolution yet. So I'll also create a post, and add my log files from the scans I've run.

About 5 days ago I connected a friend's camera to my computer thru USB to copy some pictures. Apparently his camera's memory had some type of malware on it and an autorun.inf file in it's root started it up and infected my computer with it.

The current situation is just as davrut explained in his thread, and i'll quote him "Every 5 minutes or so, two or three files are created in my windows profile temp folder with random names beginning with win followed by 4 to 6 random alpha characters followed by .exe they all run as processes and all make some TCP/IP connection (seen with TCPview"

Normally I can do an adequate job or removing any malware from a computer, but this one has thrown me for a loop. Any help with this would be great. Thanks in advance :D

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Are the below items things you knowingly added to your Startup programs?
    O4 - Startup: IncreaseCredit.txt
    O4 - Startup: Shortcut to IMPORTANT BILL-COLLECTIONS INFO.lnk = C:\Documents and Settings\Ryan.bak\My Documents\IMPORTANT BILL-COLLECTIONS INFO.txt

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O9 - Extra button: Send to OneNote - {2670000A-7350-4f3c-8081-5663EE0C6C49} - (no file)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: S&end to OneNote - {2670000A-7350-4f3c-8081-5663EE0C6C49} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\temp\winfesr.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Ryan\Local Settings\temp

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now goto this link Using MGtools and download the new version of MGtools.exe from the black bold print link in the first sentence. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

First of all, I just want to thank you for your time and expertise. Its pretty awesome that I could come to a site like this and have someone help me out with my issues :)

To answer your question regarding those 2 startup items, yes they are both mine. when I'm lazy but want a quick reminder of something, I'll sometimes put text files in the startup folder to catch my attention.

Regarding how things are working now, in the 15 minutes since I finished the last of your instructions, I continue to see those randomly named processes spawn. hopefully these logs I'm attaching now will better help identify the lingering problem.

Thanks again for all your help!

There are no malware problems showing in your logs. If you are still having problems, that would mean they showed up after getting the new logs. And this may be due to the fact that you have no protection on your PC. Thus that will be the second thing we will do below.

First you need to run MSconfig and put your PC into Normal Startup mode as requested in step 1 of the READ & RUN ME.

Second download and install each of the below programs:
Now reboot your PC and after reboot, run a full system scan with Avast and quarantine or delete everything it finds.

Now read this whole paragraph before continuing becuase you have to close browseer windows. Now run Spybot and then close all browser Windows and then first click update and update Spybots detections. Then click the Immunize selection in the left column and allow it to immunize you. Now you can open your browser and come back here to this thread to continue.

Now we need to use ComboFix

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Sorry I didn't get back right away. I went through the steps you gave, and when I ran Avast, it ended up finding thousands of files on my computer infected (everything from cmd.exe, to calc.exe, to taskmgr.exe) and couldn't heal/repair the files, so I had it delete them. That created tons of problems in itself.

I was going to just re-install the OS, considering the amount of damage that was done, but for now i've been able to deal with most of the issues, and I appear to be 100% malware free :)

Thank you for all your time and help!

Now you see the importance of proper protection. ;)

That means that you had an virus that infects all executable files. There are several that do this. One that seams to be around alot latetly is Parite. With infections like this it is always safe to reinstall anyway because they can cause unknown amounts of damage resulting in a totally unstable PC. You may want to still consider this as over a period of time you may find more and more applications that do not work properly.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
