razors that have been frozen or cryo'd any better?

I was search for replacement razors for my mach3 turbo and read about the cryo'd razor replacement heads. They say they last 3 times longer or more. Has anyone tried these things? If so give me a review on how long they really last compared to those u might buy at a wal-mart. Also, do u just store them normally? It seems like u can only get them on-line and they claim the -300f environment (for 24hrs) they are put into makes the metal much harder...I wonder if it last since I'm in a hot environment? Any user reviews would be helpful.

    cryo's razors???

Do you just mean regular razor heads that have been deep frozen? I use the mach3 and have never heard of this. If it is just a matter of freezing them in deep freeze for a period of time, I might be able to check and see.

We have liq He driven freezers that remain below -300C and I can throw a head in a cryo bag and freeze it for a while and try it out if you want a report. If it makes them last that much longer, I would be all for it (I have the room in the freezer, and as long as none of you report me... :) ).

So, do you know anything about how long they are frozen and if they are simply the stock heads??

From what I understand u just put the plain package of closed razor heads in a freezer that is set at -300F for 24 hours without opening the freezer for that period of time. Another thing is that they don't open the package because it is elevated to this temp. gradually. Since urs is already set at that temp, I am not sure if it would be the same if u put one razor in a bag and just throw it in there. According to them they do the gradual increase to protect the covering of the package, so I guess it would work fine to just throw one in ur -300F fridge. Try it and get back to me if u do so, cause they say while a reg. one last a week or few (2) weeks theirs can last months.

If you want to prolong the useful life of your cartridges, after their first use put them in a small container of olive oil or rubbing alcohol.

That helps stop the edge from becoming blunt.

They last much longer, as long as there is enough liquid in the container to completely cover the cartridge.

Cryo usually refers to liquid nitrogen temperature or lower. A trip to your deep freeze won't affect stainless steel at all.

Hey, that's quite interesting! I've never heard of Cold Treatment before!

I wonder what the purpose of it when manufacturing razors.... I guess it makes them harder (which keeps it sharper for longer). If that is indeed the case, it has a distinct advantage over heat treatment, as you would not have the problem of oxide layers forming when you heat the steel in air. Nor would you have to get messy with Case Hardening. You'd probably still need to temper it, but that can be easily done with little top no excess oxidising occurring.

    Oh I get it now!

Basically after heat treating your steel you temper it by cooling it down very quickly, which reduces the carbides (little pockets of carbon in between the crystals) but retains the martensite content. Then you keep it cool for a while and warm it up slowly to prevent the new structure from breaking during the heating period!

That's uber cool. Maybe I should try it at school..

Now, where do they keep the liquid nitrogen? :p

A lot of people I know involved in motorsports use brake rotors that have been treated by this company (link below) and they do make a difference. Not sure how much affect it would have on a razor blade though.
