Very well known problem but, as yet, no-one seems to have got an answer (probably because the cause can be so multifarious)!

Most common 'error' I can see is 41 Kernal Power
(Incidentally - I do not fully understand how to use the event viewer and what to look for so please forgive me)!

    System is Windows 7 Ultimate x 64
    Intel 3.4Gb Dual core
Nvidia GE 550 ti 1Gb graphics card
8gb Memory (only shows as 7500)
Asus P5B board with latest Bios loaded
    On board sound used.
    Cyborg Games Keyboard with Backlight
    R.A.T 5 Mouse
    2 x 1Tb hd's

Computer is not overclocked in any way that I know of

OK! Press power on and computer starts wirring away. Usual Dos type screens, detecting drives etc., then we go to Windows Splash screen. Get the four little coloured squares and my keyboard flashes - Now it simply re-boots and tells me Windows failed to start properly. I go to Safe Mode and it starts perfectly. If I bypass normal start up and go straight to Safe Mode it starts perfectly and then a re-boot starts Windows properly.
This procedure leads me to believe it is something that Windows is trying to load that is causing the crash.

    Tried:-
Removed all Nvidia drivers and reloaded originals from card cd (So now running driver v 306.97)!
Did not load Nvidia HD Audio
Removed all extraneous cards (such as sound and USB3)
Tried 'Clean Start' with little effect (this is because once the computer is running a re-boot and anything else operates normally. Thus, if I have to experiment I have to turn it off completely and leave it for an hour or so - makes for very lengthy diagnosing etc. Took me three days to go through half the listing)!
Many other things tried obviously (all the usual and some unusual) but I don't want to bore you all as you probably know what they are anyway.

Have not tried 'Hibernation' as opposed to switching it right off 'cos I am uncertain about safety of leaving the thing running overnight or if I am not in house (probably old fashioned paranoia but still !)!

I am convinced that it is a 'service' or 'process' that is causing this but I cannot pin point it 'cos Windows tries to load everything at once on start up.

Happy to listen to any theory and try most things - but please remember I work thus cannot always proceed immediately - some of my replies might take time to get through so please do not abandon this thread if no immediate reply is received.

    All and any help appreciated.

PS _ I do not have a spare Graphics card although I suppose I could use the onboard one if I had to.

    Hi and welcome to MG's,
Disable everything in your start up... then enable one at a time to find out which is causing the issue... labouress i know and time consuming :( ... but the best way of resolving your issue ;). you must restart at each start up enable. It most definately will be a corrupt file/driver that is causing the problem.
    Hope this has helped :major

I will go back to my listing and start again. Probably be a few days before I come back so please check in now and again to see what happens. I am glad at least someone agrees with me in that it it's a 'start-up' loader that is doing this.

Well - that was a complete waste of time. Did the full 'clean start' and computer crashed as per usual! No difference at all.
I have heard somewhere that this might be a graphics card problem - any thoiughts?

You may want to try, while in safe mode, to go to DEVICE MANAGER and delete the NVIDIA graphics card. Then perform a normal boot and see if windows can load the driver for you from scratch.

OK - done it. Took your advice and deleted all drivers and fired up - worked beautifully. Then W7 updated the graphic drivers automatically and wham - back came the problem. I have now replaced the Nvidia Graphics card with an AMD RAdeon and so far - success. Without anticipating I would say it was definitely a Graphics Card problem.

Many thanks for all your help - really appreciated. Signing out now so if anything further happens I will post anew.

Do yourself a favor and turn off Win 7's automatic updates. Let it alert you to the updates and you decide what you want to install. I NEVER, on any version of Windows, allow MS to update any of my hardware. I got burned twice so never again.
I go to the manufacturer's site if I'm having a hardware glitch and check for drivers.
