    Hello,

I once heard on Major Geeks that putting the pagefile on a partition other than the one your OS is running from will result in faster reads of the pagefile.

So my question is... Does this apply to ANY kind of data storage?

I am a music producer of sorts, so I'm thinking that if make a small partition just big enough to run Windows, Reason 4 and Cubase SX 2, and then keep any relevant samples and other referenced audio on another partition it will improve the performance of my machine somewhat.

Any comments on this are as always much appreciated.

    Thanks,

If I understand your main question, you're not asking about the paging file, you're asking about putting "ANY kind of data storage", such as your "relevant samples and other referenced audio", on a separate partition and whether that would yield any performance benefit. Is this right?

I believe the answer is basically no. However, I would still recommend using a separate partition for your "relevant samples and other referenced audio". The reason is that this will reduce fragmentation on your Windows partition and, when you run your defragmenter on the Windows partition, it will defragment faster than it would if you had everything on one partition. And, since fragmentation can negatively impact performance, yes, keeping your data files on a separate partition may yield a slight performance benefit.

Aside from that, keeping your data files on a separate partition is also a good idea because, if you need to format your OS, i.e., Windows, partition due to problems with your OS, your data will be left intact on the separate partition.
