My mom is having problems with her computer win98 and I wanted to go through this article like I did with mine see if it "corrects" it all. She installed Firefox about a week ago and her goal is to keep Firefox once she adjusts to it, so she has IE and Firefox at this time.

The problem is with Firefox when I go to run Trend Micro is starts to download then a MS Dos java window pops up. I also had to close it by the "x" button I couldn't type an exit/quit command and her windows help isn't working completly so I couldn't find a better way to close it. Yes, I did go through the http://uk.trendmicro-europe.com/enterprise/products/housecall_pre.php?=Check+my+PC+now

    Have a nice day

So why can't you use IE to do the scan.

Aside from Dr C's question, do you have latest Sun's version of the Java VM rather than Microsoft's? See attached pic...

I could but would the problem still be there with the Firefox and it sure would be nice if she didn't have to use the IE and just use Firefox (point for her installing Firefox is to end up not needing to use IE browser)

Re: "DO NOT POST UNTIL ..."

That's true, we do want to try to use FireFox as much as possible. You will find that it cannot be used for 100% of the websites you need to access. For some, you must use IE. Go to Microsoft update and see if you can download using FireFox. There are many more like that.

As Maxwell indicated, did you uninstall MS Java and get Sun Java per the READ ME FIRST.

Have you been experincing malware problems?

Yes, she has version 1.5.0 (build 1.5.0_01-b08) same as what I've just downloaded in my computer. It's the same as your pic there except java version says 1.5, everything is green.

Re: "DO NOT POST UNTIL ..."

Okay! So as I asked before. Are you experiencing any malware problems?

If so, complete the steps of the READ ME FIRST thread. Skip what you cannot run (tell us when you come back) and continue.

Re: "DO NOT POST UNTIL ..."

I just asked mom, she didn't uninstall MS Java, she didn't know about that.:rolleyes: Not even going to get started on her 98 I don't use it got my own, it's at the "things I could do/have done without ... ever" lol, seems she's always had problems with it which is another story.

I'd have to say yes on the malware problems all she has in avg and spybot though they have been coming up clean, she also doesn't have the spybot DSO Exploit fix.

I didn't think of doing the java because I'm going through the "READ ME FIRST..." from the start and far as I knew mom's java was working. I ran into a problem with the Trend Micro so stopped to see if it could be fixed.

I'll go and uninstall the MS Java and see if the Trend Micro will work then.

Thank you all for the input :)

I have never been able to get their online scan to work with Firefox.

Re: "DO NOT POST UNTIL ..."

Well I used the link in the "DO NOT POST UNTIL..." downloaded the unmsjvm.exe.

clicking on it brings a "Setup could not find a drive with 131991518 K8 free disk space to install the program. Please free up some space first and press RETRY or press CANCEL to exit setup." "A required resource appears to be corrupted" She has 5,451,341,824 bytes of free space.

To extract to C:/Propram files it gives a "WINDOWS\Desktop\unmsjvm.exe: The archive is corrupt"

To extract it on desktop where it downloaded it gives "A required resource appears to be corrupt"

Re: "DO NOT POST UNTIL ..."

Wait.... I misread what you wrote. You are referring to the removal tool from MS. It is only about 300k in size. It does need need any large amouts of disk space. Download it to a folder (not your Desktop). and then when you run it, it will ask for a place to extract the Temporary files to. This will usually default to a Windows Temp folder which is fine. Just use that.

Re: "DO NOT POST UNTIL ..."

I tried that as well earlier into C:/Program files and it gave me a "WINDOWS\Desktop\unmsjvm.exe: The archive is corrupt"
I'm going to go down the list as suggested earlier and try again when I'm done running the list see if it works if not I know where I'll go to ask for help ... yep right here :) If you don't understand me just say so I have my moments and can be confusing a time or two.

Re: "DO NOT POST UNTIL ..."

Delete all the copies you have of this program and do not download or extract it (when run) to the Desktop. Put it in a folder like C:\Downloads and when you run it it will ask you where to extract the files to. DO NOT extract them to the Desktop. Put them in a temp folder. It should default to that - if not make sure you change it to a temp folder. Do not extract them to the same folder you downloaded the original file to either or you will overwrite it while you are trying to run it.

Re: "DO NOT POST UNTIL ..."

I've gone throught the 'DO NOT POST UNTIL..."

On start up this comes up "RUNDLL Error loading powrprof.dll A device attached to the system is not functioning"

TrendMicro is saying there's a vunerability MS04-018. I've checked out the fix it and can't figure out where to find a download for 98 seemed like I kept going in circles. Then again the microsoft site seems like a foreign language to me lol.

This started coming up here and there using the browser " Alert document contains no data"

I've gotten the MSJava removed and still can't get trend to go in FireFox, used IE.

You all have a nice day

Re: "DO NOT POST UNTIL ..."

Did you get Sun Java installed?

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

Re: "DO NOT POST UNTIL ..."

Remember the below is a browser and should be shut down before using HJT.
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\MOZILLA FIREFOX\FIREFOX.EXE

Why do you need this ProxyServer setup. Is this for ProxyConn?
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:6198

Why do you need proxy overrides for mcafee when you do not even use their software?
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = clinic.mcafee.com; bin.mcafee.com; download.mcafee.com;<local>

Other then these comments/questions I see nothing else!

Re: "DO NOT POST UNTIL ..."

Oops sorry redid it browser closed this time.

Yes the Proxy Server is for ProxyConn. Mom got it via the local ISP provider to help speed up her internet experience.

I couldn't tell you why the mcafee overrides. I'd have to say because it's there and not taken out.

If the log is clean any ideas where/what I should refer to to find out what's wrong with her computer?

Re: "DO NOT POST UNTIL ..."

What are the current issues??? Is it:
    - RUNDLL Error loading powrprof.dll
    - and vunerability MS04-018
    - Firefox will not work on Trend Micro

For the second, you need your MS updates. See below:
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS04-018.mspx

For the third, did you install Sun Java yet.
