Sorry to raise the same issue again but I am completely baffled by the fact that XP keeps erasing the fonts in the C:\WINDOWS\Fonts folder.

Everytime I enter XP instead of the default font I can only see shapes and characters where writing should be. The only typreface that remains is 'System' (I am able to see descriptions of the folders I am browsing / Explorer). I am forced to re-install the fonts and even then Explorer freezes when I try to open the above mentioned folder. Themes are not exempt from this issues either; they all appear with the same "characters".

I have run various online checks / checked in safe mode et al and scanned and de-fragged my PC but this problem is annoyingly persistent. If anyone has had a similar issue or knows anyway to fix this please would they be so kind as to post a response (and thanks for the previous communications! I am extremely grateful)

I once fixed a computer with a problm like this. It was a virus causing the problem. I finally resolved the issue by installing SP2. Try installing SP2 if it isn't already.

This key is probably missing, or corrupt. Recreate the key itself and then reboot.

    See if that helps.

Thanks for the replies. I have included a screenshot 'pre-font reinstalliation'.

Having just reinstalled the font, I am able to view everything normally. I did try all the previous suggestions, but upon restarting XP the same problem occurs. This has led me to the conclusion that it is NOT a theme issue.

In terms of viruses, I have used all the checkers recommended by majorgeeks.com. I also use McAfee 2005 / Ad-aware SE / Spybot 1.1 on my PC, so I am sure it is not a virus/spyware problem.

It may well be a corrupted .dll file. How do I recreate the HKEY / Font file as mentioned in the most recent reply? Although I am PC literate I have never edited the reg. before.

    Thanks for the advice,

    Joss

This is my regedit screenshot. Although there are various folders containing the word 'Font', I can see no folder for \Font.

Does this explain my situation abit more?

If there should be a folder with the path 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts' how do I go about replacing/recreating it?

    Thanks again guys,

    Joss

    Hi Joss,

as Adryn in his usual genius way has possibly found your culprit, to create that ket all you need to do is find your way back to that location HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ right click on the folder saying Current Version and click New > Key and a new folder will appear name this Fonts and hit enter, then reboot *cross fingers and toes* ;)
