I have a "no audio device" problem with my system that seems to require a re-install of Windows XP PRO in order to correct (hopefully). The problem I have is I do not have a disk with this system. I bought it from a local computer store several years ago with XP pre-installed. I do own a copy of XP Pro. Can I use my CD and old Serial number to install XP on this system? Can I use my CD and the Serial number on this system? Is there a way to re-install Windows XP without a CD? Any suggestions on the best way to proceed?

    Thank you for any advice.

You should be able to reinstall using your XP Pro disk and old serial number. If that doesn't work you could try HERE.

    I have a Dell Optiplex GX 260.

I have tried everything up to and including buying a new sound card. Drivers are listed and up to date but "no audio device" listed and no sound. Nothing wrong in device manager.

Audio Type is listed as: AC97 Sound Blaster emulation
Audio Controller is listed as: Integrated AC97 codecs

I'm not sure if this path is the correct one

I chose Diagnostics and then Sound Card
There is a Run Diagnostics Button near the bottom right.
Try it and see if it can tell you that the sound chip on your motherboard is okay.

Dell does say I have 2 antivirus running which is odd. I changed antivirus several months ago, well before this problem, but maybe there is a conflict? It also indicated I have 8 sectors bad on the hard drive. I will to clear those as well. I have run error check before but will do it again.

What ever tests I run, it finds the sound card but "no audio device" is listed is sound amd devices. (see attached)
