hi folks, new guy here. i have a question that begs an answer; i am using windows 2000 professional. my computer is a bit older and not too fast. i am using sbc dsl just for the record. i have installed norton anti virus on my computer, as well as adaware. the problem i have been having for the last 4 weeks or so, is that when i scan with my adaware, i keep getting these tracking spyware bugs that no matter how often i delete them, they just keep on returning. the name of these lil bugers are as follows; MRU List HKEY Local Machine Soft
    HKEY USERS-1-5-21-14170
sometimes i will have anywhere from 15 of them to as many as 20, and then, sometimes only one or two. if anyone out there can assist me in my delima, i would be so grateful. i do not know what sysyems are safe in the removal of tracking spyware such as this, hence my post for help. thankyou for your time and your patience. g

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

MRU stands for Most Recently Used and is just a report of things being done (used) on your computer. They are not problems. That is unless you personally are overly concerned about someone else accessing your PC to see what you are doing with it. You cannot avoid getting MRUs. You can however clean them periodically with tools like Ad-Aware (and others too) if you so desire.

Similarly Cookies are not problems and you cannot avoid them unless you never do any surfing.

hi, thankyou for taking the time to respond to my post. i do have adaware on my computer, and i do initiate a scan constantly to remove these mrus. question; is there any way to tell who is behind them, and if it in fact is a sinister long arm of the law looking in on you with them? not that i am doing anything illegal; to the contrary, i am not. however, i have a serious problem with anyone monitoring my movements on my computer. you mentioned other software besides adaware, but did specifically mention them by name. could you perhaps offer some names of software that might rid my computer of these anoyances? thankyou for your time and your patience in this matter. g

I guess you did not understand what I wrote. I repeat MRUs are normal on ALL PCs. They are not problems. If you want to know who is behind..... you are. You are the one using the PC and they track what you are doing. It is part of the Windows Operating System built in features. It is not malware or anyone else tracking you.

You don't need any other software to remove them since Ad-Aware can do it for you but you don't need to worry about them or remove them. But if you want to use other programs just for the heck of it, here are a couple:

    MRU-Blaster

    MRUClear

hello again, boy do i ever feel stupid! lol i now understand what you were trying to tell me regarding the MRUs. i was completely unaware that they were merely a product of my activity. for all of the time i spend surfing the net, i know so little. i guess seeings as how i just joined this group, perhaps i need to spend some time reading the posts of others on here who have amply displayed their skills and knowledge within regards to computers. again, my thanks to you for your time in this matter. g
