"Read and run" done, files remain....

    Only discovered yesterday afternoon I had an infestation of malware. My symptoms weren't much, I couldn't view hidden files, and going through "Tools - Options - View - Show Hidden Files and Folders" wouldn't work. Then I noticed I couldn't open my C: or D: drive, it asked me what program I wanted to use to run C: Never had any pop-ups, web-site relocates or similar.

    Found and ran through the majorgeeks "Read and Run me first" instructions, followed all steps as far as I can tell. When it was all done I thought I was symptom free, but while running a fresh install and full scan of my new Anti-virus (Comodo) it found and removed g6jk.exe. In the root of both my C: and D: partitions I have a single "hidden" file, SZKGFS.dat. The former seems related to dsoqq.exe, and some of my first scans found variatons on the dsoqq name and 3N8AWSYG.EXE. All seem to be threat files as far as my google-fu can tell.

    My symptoms are gone, but the SZKGFS.dat files remain. Re-run scans with SAS, Malware Bytes, etc show no infected files. Am I really clean?

    Finally, I have -no- idea how I picked up this particular bug, though I do admit I was running an expired Mcafee AV, along with breaking a handful of other no-no rules that I've since fixed. Haven't been surfing any particularly questionable websites lately, is there any idea where I might have picked up this? Last time I had to clean a computer (many years ago) was caused by running Kazaa, learned that lesson really well.

    Well, since I might not have been successful, I'm attaching the log files here. Thanks in advance!

    One last question: I have a number of external hard drives and thumb drives, and I'm fairly certain that at least one has malware files on it. Assuming my computer is now clean (or will be cleaned) how do I safely plug one of these drives into the computer and clean it, without getting re-infected? Will Comodo AV stop it? Re-enable TeaTimer? I've already disable the autorun features with the instructions here:

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=186542

    Once I plug it in, how many programs would I need to run to make sure they're clean?

    Thanks again!

    [edit] I wasn't hoping or intending to bump with that last question, it only just now occurred to me.

    Please Disable Spybot's TeaTimer --> Should have been done as per the R&R instructions!

    * Run Spybot and click Mode
    * Select Advanced Mode.
    * Then click Tools and select Resident.
    * Now in the right window pane, uncheck TeaTimer.
    * Also while this is open, in the left column now select IE Tweaks
    * and then in the right pane make sure all the Miscellaneous locks are unchecked.
    * Now quit Spybot!

    Now:

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\g6jk.exe
    c:\windows\TEMP\TMP000000642B7AD4DE86A18D2F

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    You can make sure your AV and AS programs are up to date with definitions, and then run MBAM on the thumb drive as well as other external drives.

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    As far as I can tell, TeaTimer was disabled as I was running thru the list. It took a while to find how to disable it within Spybot itself so I just killed the teatimer.exe process to run the other scans.

    Finally managed to disable everything in Comodo AV, then shut it down, still had to manually kill a bunch of processes. Combofix ran without errors, logs attached below.

    System is still running fine, though the hidden SZKGFS.dat files still remain on the C: and D: root. Also had a funny thing pop up that may be unrelated, the system would go into either standby or hibernation mode when left unattended, never had that before. Tweaked the power settings in Control Panel, for some reason it had been set to hibernate after 30 minutes, even while plugged in. Wasn't like that before, can't imagine how that was set. I'll have to see if that comes back or not.

    Thanks!

    I am not sure what SZKGFS.dat files are related to, but it isnt malware. Your logs are clean.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
