Initial Problem: Started yesterday (7th October 2012) when Norton Symantec advised me that something had infected afd.sys. I also lost internet access- it did connect to my home network but said no internet available. I diagnosed connection problems and it said that Windows could not automatically detect this network's proxy settings. Then I ran an FSS scan and saw that it said the afd.sys file should be replaced. I put this in the Software forum and then was advised to do the Read and Run Me which is here.

Attached are all the text files as advised in the Read and Run Me Guide.

    Windows 7 Starter 32-bit Edition

Everything worked as normal up to Step 3 in the Windows 7 Malware Removal Guide.

    Rogue Killer worked fine.

Malware bytes Anti-Malware showed an error after attempting to check for updates:
    Error has occurred during Updating
    PROGRAM_ERROR_UPDATING (0, 0, DNS error)
Continued the scan as normal after this and results successfully obtained and attached.

Hitman Pro and MG Tools both worked as normal.

NB: There was no log file produced by TDSS Killer

I have also attached the first FSS check done yesterday which I posted in my original thread in the software forum. I also did a second check using FSS today (8th October) and it still said afd.sys had been infected.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Download this >> View attachment fixlist.txt

Save fixlist.txt to your flash drive.
    • You should now have both fixlist.txt and FRST.exe on your flash drive.
Now reboot back into the System Recovery Options as you did previously.
Run FRST and press the Fix button just once and wait.
The tool will make a log on the flashdrive (Fixlog.txt).
Please attach this to your next message. (See how to attach)

Now boot into normal Windows can continue with the below.

Be patient while doing the below. The fixes can take quite awhile to run. Especially the permissions repairs. It may be best to kick it off and goto bed or do something else. It is better not to run anything while the repairs are going on.

Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
    • Now select the Start Repairs tab.
    • The click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Reset File Permissions
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Repair Windows Firewall
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
      • Repair Proxy Settings
      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished.
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • Fixlog.txt from FRST
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Have done all the things and have attached the logs as requested. The internet unfortunately still isn't working- it says Unidentified Network and No Internet Access. I also noticed when I wanted to print something that it had removed all the printer drivers.
I just did another FSS scan to see whether anything had changed but it still says that afd.sys is infected and a few various other files are legit. I did notice a few failed file replacements during the windows repair.

    Thanks

Okay we will need to repeat the something very much like in my last steps but with a new fix for FRST and also some change to the procedure with Windows Repair.

      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
      • Repair Proxy Settings
      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished.
Rerun Farbar's Service Scanner to get a new log.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • Fixlog.txt from FRST
    • FSS.txt log from Farbar's Service Scanner
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Note it looks like you are missing the C:\Windows\System32\wuauserv.dll file which is required for Windows Update. Do you have your Windows Starter Edition Boot CD?

Unfortunately I didn't get the Windows Starter Boot CD as it came pre-installed on my Acer Aspire One Netbook.

I ran all the scans and have attached the files but the situation hasn't changed with the internet access.

You attach the wrong log from FRST. You attached the fix I gave you. I need to see the Fixlog.txt

Based on the FSS.txt log, it seems to think you did not run the fix.

Sorry about that. Have hopefully attached the right ones now.

Okay that's better. The afd.sys file was replaced now.

Now shutdown all protection software before doing the below.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista or Win7, make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

Message came up saying it had added to the registry and completed successfully.
    Have attached the MGlogs.zip file.

Okay you still have a bunch of services that we do not seem to be able to get running. I have a suspicion that Norton 360 is getting in the way. Please uninstall ALL of Norton and any other protection software that you have running. Do not reinstall until requested. And then reboot. After reboot, let's repeat some steps.

    • FSS.txt log from Farbar's Service Scanner
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

Uninstalled Norton 360 and selected that I won't be reinstalling (which I will when back to normal) which should've removed all norton related stuff.

Ran the three things and here are the logs:

Okay you still have a bunch of services that do not seem to be getting fixed. There may be too much damage to Windows to fix here. I suggest that you try using one of your older restore points from before where this problem began. Hopefully this may repair your connection. I see several restore points from September that may be useful.

Great- the system restore worked! The simplest and easiest opion that's already on windows ready for me has turned out rather useful.
    Thanks for your help.

You're welcome. Okay let's double check to make sure we don't see any other problems with services and also just to make sure the restore did not bring back and malware.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista or Win7, make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Looks good.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. You can uninstall RogueKiller and HitManPro.
    2. Go back to step 4 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
