I originally posted this on the software forum, but have been advised to move it to here.

Whilst working my way through the sticky READ ME AND RUN ME FIRST on malware removal, I came to the bit where I had to run Windows Defender in safe mode (step 4) and couldn't, the reason given in the post apparently being that I am running old SP levels on XP. I have SP2, so to follow the advice later on, what newer OS should I update to?

Also, in step 6, when I tried to run the online scanning I couldn't connect to the internet after rebooting in safe mode with networking connection. I have 2 Meg ADSL, not dial up as suggested, what could be other reasons for this?

After running all the scans, etc. I found my internet home page had changed to Windows Update!! Oh what a long day it was, lol.

I'm sure I'm just a bit thick and you're all shaking your heads, but any suggestions on the above would be welcome. The actual advice on the READ Me is great and I appreciate the excellent and valuable job that all on these forums provide. So this post is also my chance to say thanks!

Has you Windows XP license been authenticated with Microsoft? Have you gone thru their Windows Genuine Advantage routine that certifies your OS as being valid? If not, you cannot use Windows Defender and per the READ ME, you would then have to use CounterSpy and attach the log from CounterSpy.

The drivers required to support a connection in safe mode are probably not loading due to how your ISP's software works. The READ ME tells you if you cannot connect in safe mode for any reason, to run the scans in normal boot mode.

When you complete all the steps, just attach the two logs from step 6 and the HijackThis log from step 7.

    Hi Chaslang

Yes, the XP licence is good and and the Genuine Advantage process has been done. Windows Defender works in normal mode and the I ran the other scans in normal mode as well.

I haven't actually got any malware, etc. but at the time was just trying out the latest process on the sticky, because I was still doing it the way that was previously recommended.

When things don't go the way you guys say, I start to get worried, lol.

My machine gets automatic updates from MS, so with the reference to updating the OS, I wondered if there was a problem, or I'd missed something.

Several people have had problems running Windows Defender in safe mode. I'm not sure why, but it may be that you need an internet connection for it to run. I will have to check into this.

Happy to hear you don't have any malware problems though! Saves us some work! ;)
