    Hello Guys,

    Here is the problem.

I am running SBS 2003. Connected to this are a number of laptops both by wireless and cable.

For a year there have been no problems.

I have just re-installed Window 7 on my laptop and successfully joined the domain.

I have then mapped a folder on the server as a network folder called “DbData-New” as drive Z.

On the laptop I have then pulled up Word and Excel files from drive Z.

When I try to save them again I get a message saying the file is read only.

In September last year I had the same problem see…

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=232370

On that occasion un-mapping the drive and re mapping it solved the problem. This time it has not worked.

Before re-installing Windows 7 I did not have this problem. The other computers don’t have this problem. I have checked the file and folder attributes. From other computers the files are not read only.

But from mine I get a greyed out box on folder properties security suggesting that some files in the folder are read only. – If I click on the greyed out box and press apply the computer attempt to clear the files’ read only attribute but errors with the message that the path specified cannot be found. Checking the individual files from the server or another computer shows that they are not read only.

    What have I done wrong?

Furthermore: On my desktop I have a shortcut to a file on Drive Z. This will open the file but I can’t save the file for the reasons described above. I attempted to solve the problem by un-mapping Drive Z. But even without re-mapping it the shortcut will open the file and I then find that drive Z is re-mapped when I check on Explorer.

It’s as though Explorer is not un-mapping the drives correctly. Is there some way of ensuring that mapped drives are fully disconnected because I feel that this is what is prolonging the problem

    I am mystified! Help?

    Sorry it’s a long post.

I will always respond to any advice given.

Is the "DbData-New" folder a subfolder on the server?
Make sure you are following the same network path when mapping the folder as you have done on the other comps.
Also, try mapping the parent folder and see if that sorts the permissions.

I had a similar problem with a database program and mapping the parent folder solved the permissions where I could not access the sub-folder at all.rolleyes

    Hello Ibmest,

Thanks for your response. The path names are all the same but I am mapping to a subfolder.

You are right - if I map to the parent folder (which is also a sub folder) all is OK.

The problem is that the faulty mapping is required by our Access based front end looking for the data on the server.

My solution therefore might be to relocate the data and then change the mapping on all of the computers. That will take much less time than I have already spent attempting to find a solution.

So we have not solved the problem but established an option that will probably work. I will try that tomorrow.

Thanks again. I will report back.
