I used roxio to move some files to a disc. It hung up (nothing unusual there). I rebooted and now all the files are read only and pain to move. Is there some utility out there that will uncheck read only on these files? Even if Roxio didn't do it, I would still like them all unchecked. Also is there anyway I can keep windows from making files read only? I read the windows support article and I don't want to type the same command over and over and over. Therefore, my request for some handy little program that will do this for me. What better place to ask for such advice than MG? Thanx.

    Greetings, tm711.

    You could try CROA.

I used to use a context menu extension called "PropertiesPlus", but it hasn't been updated in years - no idea if it will work post-XP.

    Hi, tim711,

Caliban's CROA looks like exactly what you need since it does exactly what you want to do, change the read-only attribute.

@Caliban, Attribute Changer may be a more modern version of software similar to Properties Plus if you ever need it. I haven't tried it on Win7 only because I rarely have need for such programs but it is supported.

There is a command line switch that can change entire directories. If you look around you may find it. I will have to dig out one of my old books to locate it but if you cant find it, I will dig for it. Just be careful what properties you change as it is easy for the files to become unusable if you change the wrong ones via command line.

You may also find a power tool script for this. I normally look for them at sourceforge.com

thanks to all. Caliban I tried CROA and it is handy! I will try attribute changer soon too, Sach. Nibbles, thanx for the offer but I think I had better leave command lines alone.:) ( I tried the commands in the windows support article and of course they did not work - I'm sure I screwed something up). I messed around with the disc and apparently it is bad. CROA works on the stuff on the hard drive and it worked on another disc I had laying around, but not on that one particular disc;also I noticed that the drive spins and spins and spins before it will load it. Anyway, thanks again.

    Hi,

If you have trouble with Roxio burning CD/DVDs you might try CDBurnerXP. I find it very reliable for burning data discs.

If you are burning DVD-r or CDR discs you should use the option to finalize the disc. This makes it much more likely that your future PCs will recognize the disc.

I mention this because it sounds like an unfinalized disc might be why the disc spins and spins before being recognized. Perhaps the Roxio hang prevented the disc from being burned fully or finalized.
