    I'm going through READ&RUN and at the combofix I uninstalled symanticLIve. I did a restart and now I can only start in safe mode. Is It Ok to continue in safe mode?
    I found a few trojans last week but did not finish the hole READ&RUN.
    Thanks James.

    Yes, continue on in safe mode. What happens if you try to start normally?

    This is the Massage on a black screen:

    We apologize for the inconvenience but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

    If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automaticly shut down to protect your file and folders. choose last known good configuration to revert to the most recent setting that worked

    If a previous start up attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the power or reset was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start windows normally.

    Safe mode
    Safe mode with networking
    Safe mode with command prompt
    Last known good configuration
    State windows normally

    Start normally goes back to this screen.
    Last known does works but the color is 4bit and it says it lost the drivers.
    Safe mode appears to be ok.

    If this helps system info:

    XP Pro
    2Gig Ram
    32 bit
    Rad 9800 vid card
    2.3 gigahrtz processor

    A few things that i need help on:

    1. I ran ComboFix and the log shows anti-spyware Enabled. I uninstalled it before running CF. I looked again with IObit uninstaller still not there. What now?

    2. RootRepeal is saved to the desktop. I get a message: Cannot open
    it does not appear to be a valid archive. User error?

    Should I keep going or correct this issues and how do I correct?
    I understand all logs need to be posted in order to help. I just would like them to be accurate.

    Thanks
    James

    Let Combofix run anyway. You'll be fine. Skip Rootrepeal, there is only a 50-50 chance of it running.

    Sorry for the delay. Kes has taken a much deserved vacation.

    I am not seeing much in the way of malware on your system. Let's just do this and then please tell me what issues you are having:

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    ClearJavaCache::
    KILLALL::
    Driver::
    jusbcm

    File::
    c:\docume~1\James\LOCALS~1\Temp\jusbcm.sys

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Note: If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below log:

    • C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    I ran ComboFix with script and MGLogs and received this error message from MGlogs:

    ModRegistry_IniGet String (sFile=System.ini, sSection=Boot, sValue=Shell) Error #5

    Windows Version: windowSNT 5.01.2600
    MSIE Version: 8.0.6001.18702
    Hijackthis version 2.0.4

    Logs are below.

    About a week ago, I was having problems, ran some scans, found some malware and deleted them with Malware Bytes. I was trying to install a new anti-virus software and it found an old folder for Symantec Live. I deleted the folder and restarted and got the error message that I put in Post 3 previously. Now a normal boot displays only 4 bit color. I have a Radeon vid card that does more. When I try to correct the display I get a message that I'm using the wrong version of windows and no drivers found. I think I still have something in the system because of the 4 bit display. Everything else appears to be working.

    Thanks for your Help!
    James

    I am not finding any malware in your logs. I think part of your problem is you are running out of hard drive space. I suggest you post in the software forum for further assistance.

    Since you are not having any malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Malware removal from a National Chain = $149
    Malware removal from MajorGeeks = $0
