I tried to follow the READ AND RUN ME FIRST word for word. The only items I could not do is the Panda Active Scan and the normal boot startup.

On the Panda Active Scan window to pick the hard disk, the bottom left corner of the window stats there are errors on the page.

If I choose normal boot start up from msconfig, it will automatically go to safe mode. If I uncheck safe mode, next time it will only boot with selective startup. So I made sure all the programs were checked if that helps.

This is my neighbors computer. I have become the neigborhood geek to fix everyones computer, but this has been the toughest. I have learned alot from just reading post in this forum.

    Thanks,
    Eyeguy

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

First run the Look 2 Me procedure and attach the requested log:

    Look2Me VX2 Removal

Now continue on with the below instructions.

Look in Add/Remove programs and uninstall anything that says Viewpoint. Like:
Viewpoint Toolbar or Viewpoint Toolbar V35

    Now exit Add/Remove programs!

Now Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'. On the page that opens, scroll down to SMS Help Center ... then right click the entry, select 'Properties' and press 'Stop Service'. When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the 'Start-up Type' to 'Disabled'. Press 'OK' until you get back to Windows.

Next, run HJT, but instead of scanning, click on the "None of the above, just start the program" button at the bottom of the choices. At the lower right, click on the 'Config" button, and then the Misc tools' button ... select 'Delete an NT Service" ... copy/paste the following into the box that opens, and press "OK":

    SMS32

If you receive any error messages just ignore them and continue.

Now exit HJT but do not reboot when it tells you it needs to. We will do that further down after running HJT again to fix some other items.

Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Please run HijackThis and click on the Open the Misc Tools Section button on the open page. Then select Open process manager on the left-hand side. Look for the following process (or processes) and one at a time kill them by selecting it and then click Kill process. Then click yes.
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\mptft.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssn6tuu.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\nr1rnqm8.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tfthot.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\qwinsqez.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\qwinsqez.exe

After killing all the above processes, click Back.
Then please click Scan and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\x3cqp0.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\mptft.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssn6tuu.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\nr1rnqm8.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tfthot.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\qwinsqez.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\dwdsregt.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\svchostsys <--- delete this folde if found
C:\WINDOWS\Temp <--- delete all files in this Temp folder

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.
Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST).

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now.

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

    Thanks for the help.

I thought that I checked the box for "04 HKLM\ .. \Run [msconfig]. . . /auto" but I see it is still there. I will fix it again, just give me the nod.

Attached are the two logs requested. Friend while I was sleeping added Ewido program  . He said it would stop more malware from coming in, sorry if it makes you helping me harder.

So far everything is working good. Is it ok to uninstall AVG-free and install Kaspersky Internet Security? This of course after I turn off system restore when I am malware free.

    Thanks

Actually it is going to slow the PC down even more and it is going to cause conflicts with the other realtime blocking tools that are installed (Spyware Doctor, Trend Micro Internet Security 12, and Windows Defender). If you friend install a trial version he should either buy it and then uninstall the other programs, or he should uninstall all but one of these. And since Windows Defender is the only free one, I assume that would be the one he wants to keep. But that is just a guess.

Yes but first decide what to do about all the antispyware programs and get that resolved first. Make sure you also get rid of Trend Micro\Internet Security 12 before installing Kaspersky.

You do need to attach a log without MSconfig running. You must select Normal Startup and give me a new HJT log.

I get trojan horse generic.WMH when I do a scan with AVG - Free

Attached is the HJT log file.

    Thanks

You did not clear up the issues with all the antispyware applications installed.

If Ewido is a free trial version, uninstall it now.
If Spyware Doctor is a free trial version, uninstall it now.

Windows Defender is free and fully functional so you can keep it unless any of the above are paid versions. Then you should keep one (only one) paid antispyware application installed and uninstall Windows Defender. What I'm explaining is that similar to antivirus applications, you only want one realtime blocking application from the antispyware family. Note, this does not include the free Spybot or Ad-Aware SE applications since they are not realtime blockers (as long as you do not use Spybot's Teatimer as we stated in the READ & RUN ME).

You also need to have HijackThis fix the below line:

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [OE_OEM] "C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Internet Security 12\TMAS_OE\TMAS_OEMon.exe"

After doing all of the above, tell me what you decided to keep and then attach a new HJT log.

Sorry I missunderstood you. I thought you wanted that removed when we were done.

When I ran HJT the line:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto

was back up again. I marked it to be fixed.

I cannot run startup in normal mode. If I mark normal the boot.ini changes to /safeboot. If I uncheck /safeboot the normal mode changes to selective startup. I don't know if that helps.

I kept the windows defender and the AVG-free. When we are done I will uninstall AVG-Free and install Kaspersky Anti-virus. This is my neighbors computer and they have 2 teens. I believe Kaspersky catches more than the AVG-Free, unless you say otherwise.

    Once again thanks.

p.s. Is there a place to donate on this site, after we are done.?

Sounds like there may be something wrong with your boot.ini file. This topic would probably be better discussed in the Software Forum, but please attach a copy of your boot.ini file here. It is c:\boot.ini and it is a hidden and system file. You will need to copy it into a ZIP to upload it or since it is so small you can just copy and paste it inline.

You log is clean so we are done but you do have more to do and you do need more than just Kaspersky antivirus. You also need a real software firewall. All of this is discussed in the below link.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to go back to step 1 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points. Then reboot and enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

After that, you should work thru the below link:

I have a private paypal account, if you like.

    Here is my boot.ini file:

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Side note, if I install Kaspersky Internet Security then I should remove windows defender? This is my neighbors computer. I am trying to make it as easy as possible for them to stay up to date on their security software. As you can see the AVG-free or Zone Alarm, that I installed, didn't do well for them. Probably not updated regularly.

Send or post your paypal email and I will donate.

    Thanks again.

The boot.ini file looks okay! I have one more item I want to look at related to your problem with Normal Boot mode and msconfig.

Run the below procedure and attach the runkeys.txt log.

Yes! If you install Kaspersky's Security Suite, you should uninstall Windows Defender since it is built in to the secuirty suite. But remember, it must be kept up to date and they must pay for yearly subscriptions. If not kept up to date, it will not do any better than AVG and ZA. I use AVG & ZA (with a couple other free tools) on many PCs and never have any problems. But they are kept up to date and eduated surfing practices are followed.

Enable your ability to get Private Messages and then send me a PM with an email address.

I installed Kaspersky and uninstalled Windows defender along with AVG-free. Kaspersky found more trojan files after AVG showed clean after a couple of scans. With only one program they will only have to update one program. I hope it will be easier for them.

    getrunkey attached.

    Once again thanks.

Read thru this whole message before doing anything so you understand the procedure.

Copy the bold two quoted text boxes into notepad per the instruction at the top of each quote box.

Copy the text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Copy the text below to notepad. Save it as undome.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" DO NOT RUN (do not double click) on this file. We are saving it for a a backup just in case the above patch causes you any problems. If it does you can then run this patch restore the msconfig setting that was changed. I'm only restoring the msconfig setting because the others were all malware.

Now reboot your PC and let's see how things work.

After reboot look for the below and delete them (they may or may not exist)
    C:\Program Files\TClock <--- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\wkfu <--- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\svchostsys <--- the whole folder
    C:\windows\system32\Narrator.exe

Attach a new runkeys.txt log and tell me your current status.

    Found only this file
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\wkfu

    Attached new runkey.txt

Will try msconfig now and tell you how it is going.
