Readyboost and Solid State Drives

I have a tablet PC (asus eee t91mt) with a solid state drive and Windows 7 installed. Readyboost is disabled by default and I get the message that ready boost will not likely speed up my system. However, the Windos 7 rating for my drive is only 5.9, the same has my Compaq cq61 laptop, and it's not a solid state drive. Also, my my stepson has a Acer one netbook which allows for readyboost, and I think it has a solid state drive, but i could be wrong. my ausus only as 30 gigs of space.

Is there a way to force readyboost or enable ready boost on my asus, and is my solid state drive slow on my asus or is my compaw hard drive fast?

If you have a recent SSD model, there's no way Readyboost will speed anything up; part of the way Readyboost works is that it checks which the fastest drive to pull the data from is (pagefile for large, sequential files or SD/USB for small random files). A modern SSD reads 2-3x as fast as any Readyboost stick (and the best will read 10+x faster) - it would never be used even if you could force it.

No way an SD card or USB2 stick will access data as fast as an SSD (unless it's an ancient 4/8GB Intel like in the very cheapest (mostly Linpus) Acer Ones), even then you'd be better using the SD/USB as storage rather than Readyboost.

Speed is relative; rotating drives are slow to find files but fast at reading/writing large, sequential files, whereas SSD's are the opposite - they find files faster, read/write smaller random files faster but are usually slower at writing large files. The ideal PC (currently) would use both types - but it would need a savvy user to make the best choice for where each software install, download, movie etc. should be installed.

 

I have an SSD and there's no way anyone needs ReadyBoost with an SSD, as that's just for slower machines. A sales point if you wish to call it that. Look at your start-up page and trim what's absolutely not necessary at start up. A/V, A/M and firewall are not included.

Mine actually has the asus-jm s41 has a PassMark of 325 and my Compaq hard drive has a PassMark of 518. This makes my think that my Asus SSD is slow.

 

Thanks for that app Halo, erm Dave. I never did benchmark my Intel X25-V 40GB which does have TRIM. It's nice to have a comparison. I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking at, your older SSD spanks mine.

 

BAH!!! I keep forgetting to turn folding off!:-o:-D There's not much change, I guess it is the RAID. I'm OK with these numbers.

 

Nah, no RAID for me yet as the cash well is currently dry. Anyways, I hardly ever reboot so the speed of the SSD is mostly wasted in my case. I still like it though.

 

I found out that my Toshiba hard drive (Model TOSHIBA MK2556GSY ATA Device) seems to be fast, it benches a transfer rate of 120 to 160 MB per second. The fastes SSD 've seen is 180 MB per sec.
