I was curious in knowing who in the Major Geeks community uses VNC (Virtual Network Computing) software. It provides for a connection to a remote computer to provide assistant to the other end computer. It's free fm the boys in the UK but I've used it it and have always had flakey operational use of it. Works to some degree but I find it mostly unstable even with XP Pro O/S. Is there any other real reliable software out there to do the same thing but much better?

I don't mean to sound like a smart @$$ but yes, it's called remote desktop and it is built into windows xp :) but it only works from xp machine to xp machine and the host needs remote assistance enabled. right click my computer and goto properties, click the remote tab and check both boxes and press ok.

From my experiences and what I've heard, Remote Desktop is only part of XP Pro. I haven't had a problem with Real VNC, even when connecting from a dial up connection to a computer on a LAN with both on XP Pro.

Right it is part of xp pro. thats what you said you had so I did not specify what version. I donot know if it is in home edition but it is part of pro and server. As to where to get VNC. http://www.realvnc.com/download.html

Thanks....I have XP Pro & am aware of the remote connection capability however I did not know it can only be used fm one XP machine to another XP machine. I had a little better connection fm my XP machine to a Windows 98 machine w/ real VNC version 3.3. Since I downloaded their version 4.0, it's given me screen freezing on the remote end where the remote has to be re-booted to get the connection back. In the question & answer forum of real VNC, you have to wait forever to see your question answered. Usually, I rarely see the question with an answer.

Noahawk...with respect to your answer...do you have any special options checked when using VNC? Do you use it fm your XP Pro to another Win 98 machine?

Ive used VNC for years without a problem. From XP to linux. From Linux to XP, from XP to XP (alot.) Make sure your using the default display settings and have it set to 8 bit. If not its going to kill your connection. XP to linux is a little trickier, but if you decide to have to do that just PM me.

One thing to remember, if you are using VNC and you kill your bandwidth, your gonna have disconnection issues.

Besides having both Client and Server modes installed and running, I've got Accept socket connections and a password, Display # Auto is checked, When last client disconnects: Do Nothing, Disable remote keyboard and point, Remove desktop wallpaper, Poll Console windows only and Poll Foreground window checked. Those settings work fine for my connection speed (46 - 54 Kbps). The high speed connection is in an office at my college. It's time consuming to get it and I've turned it off for the summer so it doesn't get trashed with the latest viruses.

I have gone from Win98 to XP Pro with no problems, but with my connection speed (and only one phone line) I can't coordinate going XP Pro to Win98.

TeamViewer is the ultimate remote access/control software. Doesn't even have to be installed, though for frequent connections it is more convenient to install it.

I use TightVNC or UltraVNC flavors.. but for some reason, which I didn't really care to get that deep into my Win 7 will not let PCA or VNC in/out so I've went to Teamviewer. And yes I setup port forwarding, firewall reset, etc.. but I'm tired of troubleshooting it.
