I finally got DVDShrink to open my dvd but when i go to back up it recommends Nero. Thats just fine but Nero is not on my laptop its on my desktop. The desktop completely locks up when i launch DVDShrink! How do i get DVDShrink to use another way to burn the dvd? I tried DVDFlick but it won't add title. Can someone please do a step by step process on how to do this? I used the search function and the first few results confused me. Thanks!

    Problems with Nero

First of all DVD Shrink is a transcoder to shrink movie DVDs, using the Nero engine for automatic burning is just a bonus. Having said that, DVD Shrink works under Vista but Nero only from version 7.x and higher. If you insist on using bloatware but can't get it to work, uninstall both Shrink and Nero and reinstall (not just copy over exes!) Nero before DVD Shrink. After that make sure that Edit > Preferences > File I/O > Enable burning with Nero is checked.

If that still doesn't work as well as nothing on this list use free Imgburn which is an advancement of the DVD Decrypter burning engine and uses the same command set. Therefore if want to keep automatic burning and have DVD Decrypter installed on your machine you can copy over 'ImgBurn.exe' and rename it to 'DVDDecrypter.exe' so Shrink uses it with 'ISO Image File and burn with DVD Decrypter' selected as your backup target.

Of course you can also simply output to ISOs and manually add them to ImgBurn's queue. In case your HDD is still formatted with FAT32 instead of NTFS, DVD Shrink will bypass the 4 GB limit automatically by outputting to multipart ISO (.i00, .i01, .i02, .mds) which mds can be burned with ImgBurn.

In DVD Shrink Edit>Preferences>File I/O tab>Uncheck the box for burn with Nero.

This will give you the option to save the shrunk DVD files to your HD. Which you can do either as a VIDEO_TS folder or as an ISO.

I always use Nero for burning Image files to disc so I'm a bit unsure how to do it using other software. I believe if you choose to save as ISO you can then just burn the ISO using Imgburn and it will be a playable DVD.

Edit: Like the other guys said^^^ ;)

Great! It worked. I burned a movie thats about 9 years old and did good. But now i went to burn a new release but dvdshrink was analysing and ran into an error and could not continue to read. Is dvdshrink not able to decrypt some new protection or is there another new back up software. I thought Ashampoo and ImageBurn backed up to a folder and then burns but it just burns, right? I also downloaded DVD Flick but it too wants to create from a folder. I assume it just burns as well. Please excuse all the questions as i am new to this

I rarely backup DVDs. I out of habit use DVDDecrypter to rip the DVD to HD and then manipulate it from there.

Try decrypter to put the files on HD and then use DVDShrink to manipulate the copied files and see if that helps.

Decrypter does not want to work for some reason. I load the dvd turn on Decrypter and the computer slows way down. Decrypter notices the DVD but what do i do from there? Is destination supposed to be the hard drive?

The destination is a HD folder. You just browse to a folder or create a new one and then push the icon button at the bottom.

If you are having problems with this particular DVD it may have a newer copy-protection than DVD Decrypter can handle. It hasn't been updated in years. Maybe DVDFab decrypter could do it.

BTW, I think all DVD backup software copies the files to your HD before manipulating or burning. They may not explicitly state this and might automatically delete the files when finished but I believe they all work this way.

Its the new Batman movie so i think it is too new to handle.

Just remember that DVDFab Decrypter will only rip it to a DVD9 "format" (8.5GB disc). Then you have to further compress it to a DVD5 format to burn it onto a "standard" DVD disc.

    Such as with DVD Shrink?

I use VideoDVDDuplicator, see how that one turns out. But I haven't used it for copy protected content, nor will want to either. Still try it out, it copied the exact DVD entirely, so if it's 7 gigs, then that's what you get, no compression, and then it burns to a DVD right after extracting, if you want to.
